A few perish every year here on Bays de Noc…the costs can exceed even $20,000 to air rescue them…The thickness of ice is meaningless when rain and warm temperatures set in…wind and/or current can split a mile of ice away from the shore. This has happened so often here that some pretty hefty fines are starting to be levied if warnings are not heeded and rescues result…especially if a vehicle ends up on the bottom of the Bay. Its just not worth the risk.
