What line to use for DEEP water?

I have an opportunity to head up to Wisconsin and do some Lake Trout fishing next weekend and am looking for a little help.

Of course I would take any advise anyone may have. But the main thing I want to know is what line would a guy use for depths in the range of 300ft? Mono would have too much stretch I would imagine. I was thinking a braid of some sort, but some of them soak up water and Im sure that would be nothing but trouble in the winter.

Any help at all would be greatly appriciated. I will post a report when I return.

It seems as though you are believing that the fish are going to be that deep. From my understanding the Lake trout move up considerably more shallower than they do in the summer months because the water is colder. I imagine that you will only be letting out maybe 50 feet or less in line.

I would go with a braid, fireline crystal, or a floro carbon. My two cents.

I’m not a pro in this area by any means, but I know for a fact that they very well could be much deeper then 50ft, even in the winter. Hence my concern with the type of line. Do some reseach Dan, even here on IDA there is a post that might help you out. Ice is here..

I would like help from someone with personal experience in this area if possible.

I’ve been using fireline crystal the past couple years for deep water perch (60-70 FOW)and it works just fine out in the cold.

I’ve fished lake trout in 100 fow through the ice with mono before and it was tough to detect a strike with that much stretch. I would suggest power pro with a flourocarbon leader.
