heard good things about this was wondering if a person has to wipe off old grease or simply reapply? Directions didn’t specify.

As much as it pains me, I agree with Bret.

Clean it as good as you can before adding the hot sauce. You will like this new grease a lot

Take off the side plate. Hit the gears with a shot of Brake Clean or Gumout, then a shot of compressed air. Wipe clean. (You can buy the compressed air in a can at any office supply or electronics store. Looks like a can of hairspray) Apply the hot sauce. Done inside 5 minutes.

Like everyone else has said, clean off the old lube before adding new, but if you are removing GREASE, you should be replacing it with GREASE – not oil.

In general, oil bearings, and grease gears.

I disagree. For ice reels, use all oil.

Grease and winter do not go together, get the grease out of there!

Gaaaaak!!!!!!!!! How did I end up posting on the Ice Forum!?!

Sorry, I was referring to lubing reels for “normal” fishing.

Works great for that too! It’s nice to only have one set of oil and grease and not having to switch between seasons. For the cold, I still use a very light film of grease on the main gears, but wipe all excess off, then it also gets a coat of oil all around. I haven’t found the Hot Sauce Grease to get too sticky, and it keeps the reel from feeling sloppy. For the most part, my ice reals are Tica or a few Cardinals, so slop is not really a issue, but on the cheaper set ups, I have found it to help.

I started to use synthetic motor oil 5 w 30 smoothes out the real and never an issue in cold weather.

I prefer Franks Redd Hot over Tabasco, but never tried either on a reel. OK – dumb joke. I like the synthetic motor oil idea – never tried it. Hot Sauce is awesome tho.
