The Effect of Weather Patterns

We sure have had a number of fronts this ice season so fare. Big cold fronts with high pressures to falling barometer and thaws. Ice conditions have been from soft, drift filled, slush and at times hard and shinny making keepers a must, not to mention are share of gusting winds….. but yet, we fish through it all

If you had a chance to read my last report from pool 8, Jan. 1st through the 3rd, all three days produced good fishing.
As mentioned in the report there was no reason to get on the ice early with the bite not picking up until 9am anyways. Looking at the weather patterns for all three days shows why the fish were turned on.

Thursday and Saturday the bites were more consistent than the bite on Friday. At nine o’clock the two best days the barometer leveled below 30, and then kept falling. Getting rid of the high pressure had these fish feeding aggressively for during the day.
Friday, a little slower but producing quality fish at nine o’clock and then on, well…..the barometer leveled out a little on the high side but hovered at the 30 mark till 3, then went on the rise. My best bite was exactly from 9am till 3pm.

With ice covered roads this morning and yet another change in the pattern, I picked a good day to work on the honey do list
I would bet there are still being fish caught today but would also say the bigger year classes are a little tight lipped.
Today with a jetting skyward barometer and plummeting temps I’m thinking football is going to be more relaxing

Just 2 cents worth of a theory

I see I’m not the only one staying in today due to this great weather Mother Natures thowing at us. I know you can’t catch them from the couch, but some days its worth a try. Anyone got Mother Natures number? Maybe we can call her and talk her into at least a 3-5 day stable patter. This front every other day things starting to get on my nerves

Very good points Brett. YEsterday we caught crappies all day long. Today with the falling temps, high winds and rising barometer the bite was extremely tough. Only one keeper crappie in two hours of fishing. Of course, I’ll have to check this afternoon to make sure there not biting yet.

One effect it’s having is I’m depressed! The jet stream is picking up every clipper and brining them right over us. If it isn’t cold and windy it’s windy. Three years ago I sold my winter boat. This year I replaced it but the weather is keeping me off the open water. I’m actually thinking of going ice fishing.

Great report Bret as always I really look forward to reading your posts and I always learn something new when reading them.
Today I am going to go buy a Barometer and learn more about its affects on fishing.

    Thanks again Jeff

I have the same thoughts about the Barometric pressure When the pressure is low the fish are very active but when the pressure is high the fish feel the pressure under the ice and dont seem to feed as agressive just for the fact that the pressure has them feeling full.

Bret, Where do you get them SWEET weather pattern charts I need that website so if you could please let me know I would appreciate it greatly

I’ve been looking for some time now trying to find a website that shows the pressure clearly and accurately.

I was on pool 10 Friday and Saturday. Friday there were at least 10 northern on the ice Saturday there were none but there were more bass. The gills were slower on Saturday also.

You’re right, the bite was tough today. Not that they weren’t biting at all but certainly not a phenomenal bite. I haven’t felt like I’ve been on a great bite yet this year. Its been tough all around for our crew..We’ve had some good numbers days but when the numbers are up the size is down, and when the size is up, the numbers are down

Wow, I learn something new everyday. So, really, fish tend to bite better when the pressure is at 30.0 and falling? I saw on the charts, that it tends to drop slow, like on your day Brett it dropped .3 or so. Is it possible to have it keep going down into the mid 20s rather rapidly, or is it a slow process?

It all depends on the front, today the barometer is dropping like a rock. I wish I wasn’t sitting here having lunch at work right now, my prediction for today is when things level out the feed bag is going to be on big time

I have always found the fishing to be better when 30 and under. Above that is high pressure and most of the times a tough bite.
