The start of the 2009 ice season is well under way and as normal, I am late to the party. Late to get on the ice and as of late, the bite has been hard to get on track. I have been out only a handfull of times with limited success. I have found that the bite has been good very early in the morning and again late in the evening. The day bite has been nothing short of BAD. Today the tables tunred and I was greated with big Bull gills waiting to eat, what a day!
We got on the ice early and started off the day with a nice big gill. The rest of the day we had constant action. The overcast weather and the approaching front on its way made for a good bite. The fish were active, but a spring bobber was a must. You could watch the fish come up on the flasher, but the spring was the ticket. I am not sure where the total ended up for the day, but it was a great day on the lake with good company. I can’t tell you how much I needed a day like today. Just what the Doctor ordered

The best part was I came home to the wife and a case of beer. No kids, a fish fry and some quality time with the Warden.

A couple of those gills are fit to bust they’re so fat. What was the hot bait?

    Thats Bob’s secret!
He gets that pannies smell all over his clothes and hands during the winter.(Get your mind out of the gutter) and by the time Ski season rolls around he has that scent all over his Dunwrights!

As always – Great report Bob. I almost called ya yesterday to chase some flags on your favorite lake, but the whole house is sick from the Hollidays. Have you heard of any good pike action this winter yet?

I was on the same lake and did well on Saturday as well but didn’t really get into them till around 3:00 when the freezing rain started. How deep were you fishing in?

We moved around a lot, drilled a bunch of holes, but found the fish to be most active in the deeper water

I was pretty deep as well, 9-10′, was trying around the sunken islands and only marked bait fish in 5-6′. Moved to deeper water around 2:00 and stayed there for the remainder.
Maybe I’ll see you out there, still riding the tan King Quad pulling an eskimo, ice just isn’t thick enough to drive the diesel on yet.
