Need some help here . I want to buy a St.Croix Legend ice rod but was wondering if I can buy ONE rod for both Walleyes and Panfish or do I need to buy two rods ? Will one action work well for both ? If two rods are needed , what actions should I get? Thanks .

I’d go with the Ultra-lite for the panfish and the Med-lite for the Walleyes. I have both and they do a great job, but if you wanted to go middle of the road, go with the Light model.
Keep in mind, they have different spring bobber models. If you go with one rod you may want to opt for 2 different types of spring bobbers.

This is the exact set-up that I have. It is unbelievable how these rods perform.

I have out fished my buddy every time iv been out fishing with him since i got these rods. And i never out fish him. I see/feel more bites than any other rod i have tried. I have a UL for sunnies and a L for crappies on up to walleyes. Amazing rods is all i can say. Good luck on choosing.

If you want to borrow it and try it out before you buy one just give me a shout its yours anytimeJanuary 5, 2009 at 7:22 pm #734231I grew up in Park Falls WI. That is where they make all of the High end ST. Croix fishing rods and I get all of my sucker/shinner minnows from there. I was just in there between Chrismas and New Years. At the company store they have a ice fishing section where you can buy the Ice fishing Legend ice rod (Seconds). The seconds have defects in them but it is nearly impossable to find them. The best thing is that the seconds are only $25 and a brand new Legend rod is $50. So at the store in Park Falls you can get 2 second legend rods for $50 instead of just 1 perfect one. I have 3 (second) Legend rods and have never had a problem. So if anyone is in northern WI stop in at the St. Croix store and check it out.

Welcome to IDO Woody. And thanks for letting everyone know about the deals available at the Croix store.

January 5, 2009 at 8:18 pm #734259Like others said… If you only want to buy one, get the light action. Even though its a light action, these rods seem to be alot stronger than most light action ice rods would be, and you should be able to handle walleye fine. The key to catching fish is the spring bobber anyway, so buy another medium, or medium-heavy spring to go with the light action one that comes with your rod.
January 5, 2009 at 8:40 pm #734267I have a MH, ML, and L and I would say that I have been disappointed with them. I would say the actions are a rating or two off. The MH is more like a pool cue and the ML seems like a buggy whip to me. I will say that the spring bobbers are great, but a rod with too stiff of action scares me when I am fighting a fish. I have never used the UL, but a Light should need for walleyes. At a similar price point, I would look into a Thorne Bros. custom rod.
