Quick Pepin Ice Report

I made my inaugural run out to check out the walleye action on Lake Pepin today. I did not do very well with only three walleyes but I did mark a lot of fish. I just had a tough time getting the fish to commit to my offerings. It was not for a lack of trying though, I through the tackle box at them. I ended up picking up one fish each on a red ratso tipped with a fathead fillet, a pink glo devil, and a chart/white jigging rap.

The area I was fishing, Maiden Rock, had varying ice thicknesses. I drilled from 7 inches to 12 inches depending on where I was. I saw on guy way out near the middle with a full size pick up when I was leaving. Guys, the ice just isn’t good enough for trucks yet.

By the way, at the Maiden Rock launch there is a nasty crack just out from shore so be careful in that area.

Are wheelers OK from the campground out?

Wheelers are just fine. I took a Polaris Ranger out and had no problems with either the ice thickness or snow drifts. I did have a bit of slush on the way in this evening but that is nothing a little cold air won’t fix.

I took a short ride out on the ice this morning and the warm night has beat up the ice. The slush was a good 6-7 inches deep and the cracks were really opened up.

    Be careful out there guys.

Thanks for the update on ice conditions Lenny. I’d like to get out there, but will probably wait till it gets a little thicker out there.
