Last weekend, as posted here, some reports of old holes becoming hidden dangers were made. I normally fish areas of very little to only moderate current, such as Stoddard, but even there a report of rotten ice was made.
I posted a question in that thread but found little response so I’ll try again.
As a 35 year ice fishing veteran I still respect the danger that ice fishing presents and I’m familiar with springs, and late ice….but….I don’t ever recall previous holes, rotting out and being hidden by massive snow in December! Clearly the warmer water and a hole to bring it to the top is insulated by the snow resulting in these conditions. My question is what will it take to “heal” these spots? We’ve had a week of nights below zero, but is that enough?
I often take others, less experienced about ice fishing and usually restrict that to times when conditions are practically fail-safe, but this has me a bit perplexed.
So, anyone that has been on the ice over the last week, where these conditions existed, what’s changed?
I can spud my own way around, but who wants to do that if they don’t have to do it? I certainly am not inclined to take children that often just fart around on the ice- here and there -and have to worry about them getting dunked.
Any input? Mississippi River conditions most preferred.
Thanks and a reminder to all to be safe, we need everyone here next year to keep up the great community at IDO.
