Ice Condition Question

Last weekend, as posted here, some reports of old holes becoming hidden dangers were made. I normally fish areas of very little to only moderate current, such as Stoddard, but even there a report of rotten ice was made.
I posted a question in that thread but found little response so I’ll try again.
As a 35 year ice fishing veteran I still respect the danger that ice fishing presents and I’m familiar with springs, and late ice….but….I don’t ever recall previous holes, rotting out and being hidden by massive snow in December! Clearly the warmer water and a hole to bring it to the top is insulated by the snow resulting in these conditions. My question is what will it take to “heal” these spots? We’ve had a week of nights below zero, but is that enough?
I often take others, less experienced about ice fishing and usually restrict that to times when conditions are practically fail-safe, but this has me a bit perplexed.
So, anyone that has been on the ice over the last week, where these conditions existed, what’s changed?
I can spud my own way around, but who wants to do that if they don’t have to do it? I certainly am not inclined to take children that often just fart around on the ice- here and there -and have to worry about them getting dunked.
Any input? Mississippi River conditions most preferred.
Thanks and a reminder to all to be safe, we need everyone here next year to keep up the great community at IDO.

Pool 8 backwaters for the most part are in great shape with a good 8 inches of ice. The wheelers are even out in force now.
The areas of concern are still the deep snow drifts that stick out like a sore thumb and current. I don’t expect much if any change for a week with warm days and cold nights being predicted.
The thing that has slowed down perfect ice conditions in the La Crosse area is the snow. Every time we had the start of a good clear ice it was dumped on with 5 or more inches of snow. I think with the warm days predicted the snow will settle and things will freeze up tight over the nights. That is unless we get another snow squall

well, today the first outing for me. My buddy and I fished blue lake between LaCrosse and Lacrescent. I won’t be fishing there for awhile. I stepped through in 15 ft of water. As we walked off my buddy went to his crotch on the same track we walked in on. Alot of water on top of the ice, maybe that is why. But the ice there is not safe in my opinion. just a heads up.–john

Again …this is an area (Blue Lake) that has springs and should always be approached with caution no matter how much ice is else were. Very glad to hear you are both ok John

Just got off the phone with JP Mason. He is finding good ice yet in back water bays but things are getting very wet on top.
With water standing on top of the ice the bottom of the ice will leave in a hurry if around current. Just a heads up on what us weekend warriors will have to deal with tomorrow.

I have changed my game plan three times today already while making calls and watching the weather

So much for getting ice making weather! With rain tonight and a temp of 42, it sure seems like a recipe to rot ice in a hurry. All of the slop on top, the chance of snow again Saturday night, and then a few days of temps near freezing…..what a mess.
I’ll find some ice, but probably be pretty shallow underneath just in case. There’s a holiday deer hunt only about five miles from me so maybe the shanty will become a blind. Anyone know how to make venison taste like gills?
I’m thinking the harder part will be to figure out what color jig those bigger bucks like!

Yep, after today I will leave it alone this weekend and wait for the next cold snap.

As far as deer…I would think anything in the color of corn As far as making them taste like gills ….let me know how that works for ya

I was one of those 25 guys out there. I can honestly tell you, it wasn’t worth the walk out there. There’s 3-4″ of slush and water all the way out and all the way back.

In the 3hrs I was out there, I saw 2 keeper fish. 1 nice Perch and a 16-17″ Walleye with lots and lots of small fish to be caught. Maybe the mornings are better, then again, maybe not.

If I do go out tomorrow, I may wear my Cabelas neoprene hipboots….it’s a wee bit messy out there.
