First off, I’m in the same house as you Steve…so to speak. Never had a problem before…until this year.

The good thing (for me) is that I only have two holes about 2 inches and with a little canvas patch..well, it won’t be as good as new…but the light/wind and snow won’t come in.

So what does everyone do to keep the critters out of the canvas throughout the summer?

I’ve used bounce fabric softener sheets in a camper that seem to be effective. Anything else that can assure me of a mouseless start of the ice season next year?

PS Forget the stink bait jokes…mice love the stuff.

The mice did a job on the skin of my portable. I’ve lived here 31 years and this is the first time I’ve had that kind of mice problem. I was storing the portable in the loft of my shed so they got all the way up into my loft. I had it cleaned out and stored with the travel cover on but I didn’t put any Bounce sheets or moth balls in it. I didn’t pull it down until last week and I was shocked to find the holes in the skin. I have some other canvas stuff stored in the loft and I need to pull that stuff down and check it out once we get some warmer weather.

“I hate those meeses to pieces” – I think I remember that from a cartoon. The good thing is they don’t eat that much. I store my portable in my detached garage during the warm months and built a small platform to keep it about 6″ off the floor and then always make sure I have at least two trays of D-con mouse/rat pellets in there. It seems if they have those to munch on they leave my other stuff alone. Maybe Bret will chime in with his remedy.

The father in law always put mothballs in his boat for the summer….until the boat seat sitting right to a few balls became home for a mouse family.

I don’t like them with young kids around either…even though they stink, they look too much like kid candy…and then there’s the gas they give off when they get wet.

Must have been a mousie kind of year this summer.

This past spring is put around 10 or so fabric softener sheets in mine as well as 3 car air freshner trees. I had the shack in the garage where I know there are mice, and never had a problem at all. Wish I would have done the same for my previous shack

Put those death traps in and around the shed. Ritter uses them with success, or do what I do and lock the neighbors cats in my shed.

Moth balls and bounce fabric sheets. 1/2 doz. balls in a half closed zip lock bag. Couple bags will do. Teach the kids to stay the el away from YOUR stuff.
No kids, no wet, no sweat, and no mice. Very simple really.

And the compartments in my boat get the same treatment.

My bro-in-law uses Cab Fresh in his tractor cabs. It’s all natural and good smelling. He doesn’t have any more mice problems. I’ve tried it with good results in my camper. ‘Course I never had a mouse problem anyway, just like the nice smell it leaves. Fleet Farm carries it- – jerr

Dry the skin, take it off, fold it up and put it in a plastic tote. Throw some dryer sheets in the tote and then duct tape it shut. Put the tote in the sled and you are good for the summer.

Just a bag of rat bait. It’ll be the last thing they chew on.

One question is there any food source in the area? I haven’t had any mice problems in my garage, but the next door neighbor has trouble. They keep all sorts of grass seed, flower seeds, and bird feed in the garage and it isn’t sealed. If there is a food source, these little guys will find an area to call home. My 2 cents worth.

BK, I use these around my house and out at the shed to keep the mice away. Pick up a few next time you’re at the mans store or Menards.
