I really don’t like to use a lantern in the clam fish house due to the gas smells (Bad headache) as well as one more hot item to risk burning lines and cloths with. I bought one of those rope lights the 1st year that clam came out with them. It just is not bright enough to see bobbers with or tie lines. I just wanted to see what all of you are using for lighting inside your portables. Have the newer rope lights gotten brighter, Mine ( light that is ) is rather short ( maybe 2-3 feet long ) Thanks in advance for all of your thoughts. Good luck to all of you this ice fishing season!!!!!

I use an LED headlight. It points where I am looking and provides more than enough light. And most importantly……..it take up VERY little room.

I picked up 2 six footers at Gander last year, plenty of lights for tying and definitely to see the bobbers. I have them both switched, so I can just have 1 on or both. I have been told, my shack looks like a bordello out on Mille in the middle of the night…

I use the LED head light also, after awhile you don’t even notice your wearing it. Mine has 2 white light settings and a red light. Plus if your night fishing and leave the shelter for any reason your light goes with you.

A princeton Tec Aurora headlamp is my means of lighting. Runs 150 hrs on the low setting. 50 hrs on high. Its very small, light and very bright. Lights where you look.

I can’t beleive I don’t see more people with them. If you don’t want to wear it on your head in the house, just hang it and tilt it so you can see.

I once signaled a military plane flying low with no lights on out of Fort Ripley trolling with it. Ask Calvin

I just purchased an excellent light for my portable at FleetFarm for $7.99. It’s round, has 3 settings, runs on 4 AA batts, (LED for longer life)and has a loop attachment for attaching/hanging to the poles in the portable, and lights up the house perfect. I only used it over last weekend, so I’m not sure how long the batts will last.

I use the same set-up I use for catfishing in the summer. I’ve got a Black & Decker Start It 12 Volt DC Power Supply. It has a 12 Volt DC Accessory Outlet on it that I plug in a small 100 Watt Power Inverter into. The power inverter converts the DC power to AC and you can use any standard utility light for your fishhouse.

I plug in your standard Clamp On Work Light into the power inverter. I use one of the new low wattage bulbs so there is very little power drain and you can run that light for hours. I have a 12 watt florescent bulb that produces the equivalent of a 60 watt bulb. You can use this set-up to give you all the light you would want in your fishhouse.

The DC Power Supply cost around $35 or so and the Power Inverter is about $20. The DC Power Supply is pretty handy to have. I leave the charged DC Power Supply in my truck all winter for those occasions when you may need a jump start somewhere.

I know a lot of people are using flexible Hong Kong best LED’s in there portables.

I tried the white 12V LED rope light from GM and wasn’t too overly impressed. I just picked up some 18″ rigid light bars from Menards for my Otter, $15 each. They have 3 sets of 4 LED’s that tilt and swivel wherever you want to point them. They run on 6 AAA’s and I have no idea how long they will run, or how durable they are. I didn’t want to order on line and wait. They seem to put out plenty of light so far.

Plenty of LED lighting out there on ebay just search for it.

The nice thing about LED’s are they are durable, quiet, and no more fumes to breath.

I use two LED puck lights that i picked up at menards, i just have an extra marcum battery and i run it off of that. I hang them with velcrow on the roof of the house. i have a Clam yukon n the two lights light it up more then enough. When im done with them i just toss them under the seats. Doesnt take up much room n will run on the batterie for days.

I use this compact propane lantern. I has worked well for me for a few years now. I just wrap the included chain around one of the poles in my shack.

I have one of those little coleman lanterns as well. Weighs nothing, takes up very litle room and will actually keep the chill off the shack if it isn’t TOO cold. I like headlamps as well though.

Thanks for all the input guys. I went with a Headlamp. It’s bright and cheap to run. And I like the idea of always having it with me.
