For Those That Spear Fish In The Winter, Legislation Has Change The Law For When You Can Spear, It Is Now And Has Been Legal To Spear Fish Threw The Ice Since November The 15th Compared To The Old Date Of December 1st. I Sure Wish They Would Quit Messing With This Stuff.

How are you going to harpoon northerns if there isn’t enough ice?
It really dosen’t matter when the starting date is because the season starts as soon as there is enough ice, right?
Personally I wish they would do away with the harpooning season all together…just my opinion…
November 29, 2008 at 1:29 am #724896I Agree About The Opinions No Problem There, But I Don’t Think That Spear Fishing Should Be Gotton Rid Of. I Feel That If You Are A Responsible Spear fisherman Then It Is No Different Than Angling Pick. Now I Hear People Say What If One Gets Off The Spear, Well It Shouldn’t I Myself Carry 2 Spears Because If I End Up With A Bad Shot I Have The Second Spear To Aid Me In Not Losing The Fish I Have Done This For 30 Years And Not Lost 1 Fish. Now I Have Seen Big Fish Kept Either Way That Should Have Been Released So It All Revolves Around Being Responsible And Having Respect For The Sport. Any Ways I Was Fishing On A Local Lake On The 16th Of November Casting Daredevils I Just Don’t Understand Why They Would Make The Season Longer As You Can Spear The Fish If You Can See Them In The Water. Anyway Just My Opinion.

They should do away with all seasons that everybody doesn’t approve of….then we’ll all have nothing to complain about.
The date was changed due to the fact that every so often, there is decent ice in many areas in late november. When that happens, the anglers get a week or two of great action and the spearers would be sidelined……now they can get out and hit it as soo as the ice is decent.
I will be hitting a local pond tomorrow and I hope a nice pike is waiting for me………winter pike is as good eating as any fish that swims.
As far as taking the bigger fish, whether it hits a tip-up or comes in and looks at a decoy – any 5-10 lb fish I get in the winter is coming home with me, as they make for a fish bake that will blow your mind.

November 30, 2008 at 4:23 am #725025I really wonder how many other speared gamefish go home in buckets???
I suppose no one will ever know.
I am not accusing anyone of anything here, but I’m sure rules are broken just like everything else.
Good luck spearing, hope you nail the big one!

I’d wager that the number of other game fish that get speared is one heck of a lot less than the number of out-of-season game fish that go home in buckets when caught panfishing after the general season closure. My guess is based on the fac that there are something like 17000 spearers and a couple of million anglers……..the number would lead me to believe that the anglers take more illegal fish……
Saw 8 fish this AM…..but they were really on a tear. I never threw the spear – and not for a lack of trying. 7 of 8 hit my decoys and were gone before I could even grab it – including a couple of nice ones in the 4-5 lb range……maybe I am just getting slower….
