With the ice quickly forming what does everyone pack for safety items?
    For me:
I will put on a set of picks which are easy to just put around your neck for easy access.

I also have a emergency whistle that comes with the new Vexilar Cold Snap Parka.

Something else that I carry on early ice is a bleach bottle that has been cut out to accompany a throw rope. I have 50’ of 1/4” rope that is tied to the bottle.

Most important I never fish alone.

I do have a pair of ice picks for early season, but my best line of defense is common sense. As a bigger lad, I usually wait until I see people out on the ice. I figure safety in numbers.

    Thanks for the reminders Jeff.

Here’s another safety tip from a previous post.

LIFEJACKET LIFEJACKET LIFEJACKET can’t be said enough if you go through and have to swim you are using energy that you need to get out.
one other thing is to wear it under your coat so it wont catch on the ice as much.
the other thing is floating ice picks they dont do any good if they come off and sink to the bottom
and allways go with a buddy

Good tips Jeff. The rope and picks are a must. I wear a life jacket too early and late season.

    All good advice…

However I’m going to read the fishing reports on IDO while I watch the quart of brandy go down from the comfort of my house.

    Come ON APRIL!

Dang…saying that could get me in trouble in the ice forum.
