Usually I head to NE SD for first ice. The possibilities are endless out there and the fishing is fantastic. Plus, they usually have ice before us.

I’d guess my first trip will be the back waters of Pools 9 and 10…These waters have produced some awesome catches of gills, crappie and perch…I’d bet that there will have to be some new waters to discover this year with the water levels so low…
October 27, 2003 at 8:35 pm #279749Spirit Lake,Ia, for some perch. Can’t wait for those water temps drop!
Ryan HaleOctober 28, 2003 at 1:47 am #279781With the backwater water so low a big guy like me won’t have to worry as much about fallen through as the water won’t be as deep as usual. You guys are starting to get this guy looking at getting back into ice fishing with all the good stuff shared on this new forum. In fact, so much so, that Nate and I each picked up a new one man flipover style ice fishing house. Now if I can only get my computer into the ice house I can type away on the board and catch fish at the same time. lol. Thanks for all the sharing guys and keep it coming. Thanks, Bill
October 28, 2003 at 1:59 am #279785Hopefully I’ll be tagging along with Ryan, chasing perch.

October 28, 2003 at 4:24 am #279796Ok… Mille Lacs Lake w/ Scott Steil?… lol
I’ve got all his spoons so he has to take me to get them back!
October 28, 2003 at 1:48 pm #279820Pending on ice…some small lakes North of Grand Rapids or the Big Pond…Lake of the Woods….nothing like the first ice up there….
October 28, 2003 at 1:51 pm #279821James, I was just thinking thatlast night. I am going to have to go back down and fish the River this fall so I can get my winter tackle box back. LOL
Either that or you are going to have to come to SD with us for first ice!!
Ryan, I used to live in Iowa, and it is good thing the pheasant and deer seasons were so late in the year. I used to die waiting for that ice to form. If you ever want some great panfish lakes to fish I have lots of spots. Unfortuately, they are South of Des Moines.
October 28, 2003 at 3:37 pm #279839I am not sure what lake I will go on first but I sure hope it happens pretty quick.. This dry sweating, muscle twitching, hook setting arm snap needs a fix really bad. My shack has been set up in my driveway now for about a week and the neighbors keep giving my son and I these strange looks. I must admit that this may end a little now that the ground is snow covered. The shack looks just a little more in place with the snow.
Besides the shack all set up and stuff my son has a bag that resembles that of Santa that will keep us off all real early ice just because of it’s weight. He claims there are “just a few samples” in there. I’ve been wondering where some of that new stuff disappeared to!! I better be checking my rod inventory and see if I have one or two left. Football is over so he is pretty pumped for some ice now.
October 28, 2003 at 6:55 pm #279860We’re plannin a trip up to leech right after the new year , never been there before , anyone have any tips on were to stay ,we’re probably rentin shacks.
thanks in advance !!!October 28, 2003 at 10:04 pm #279879Scott thanks for the offer.I have the Iowa Great Lakes within 45 minutes of my place so I’m fishing them mostly.I did fish Big Creek outside of Des Moines last year. And yes the pheasant hunting gets me by until the ice forms.Best of luck.

That I can handle!
October 29, 2003 at 3:30 pm #279944I usually start in the Chisago area, but try to get in Independence as soon as possible for the ‘eyes. Those of you that have been with me or seen me out there know what I’m talking about.
October 29, 2003 at 6:01 pm #279961Thanks for the reminder Mike. I’ve been lucky enough to be invited to a “secret” hole on Independence. It only produces first ice, but it’s pretty amazing when they are on. Maybe I’ll see you out there.
October 30, 2003 at 5:26 am #280061I have a nice little pond behind my house that has some beautiful crappies in it. Being very small it will ice over early so that will probably be my first spot.
My daughter and I have had some wonderful times on that pond and expect to have more this year.Gator Hunter
