Building an ice house

My brother in-law and I are going to be building an ice house this fall. What I was wondering is if anyone knew of a place that I could buy some plans, with a material list. I know that they sell these at Menard’s for sheds and such, but I didn’t know if these exist for ice houses.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Give me some ideas on what you might want. I’ll draw it up and give you a materials list!!!

We built an ice house last year , it was 8by12 on a single axle winch style trailer , we had the tires come up into the house which we covered up and made into benches. we built a bunk on the back end with the top bed folds into the wall. the bottom one we use as a bench. we put a cabinet in and thats where we keep the batteries to run the lights, we put spotlights above each hole , for some style! carpeted it with a all purpose type .. insulated the walls with foam board style insulant. the roof is insulated with fiberglass, and a tin roof … heater comes out the side and is double vented for fresh air intake. we made the house a little to high , so it sucks driving down the road. it took longer then expected to build ,but we wanted to do it right.. we pretty much just went of shed plans and revised them a bit , all the inside work is custom, i dunno what you have in mind if your gonna have a house on a wheel, or a smaller one on skids… have fun with it thought , feels great to fish in something you built , means more i guess ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,TIm

I sure ain’t no carpenter but I always thought keeping the shack as light as possible would be nice (that way it’s easier to get off the bottom of the lake ). If I built another one I would strongly consider 1/4 inch plywood and 2×2 studs to save on weight.

We’re looking for something big enough to fit about 4 people comfortably, with the possibility of that many again kids running in and out. Something that we would be able to take apart on the ice probably due to the size of the shack we’re looking to build, although that isn’t the biggest deal.
I agree that we should try to keep it as light as possible, but I guess I’m more concerned with fitting people in it. As far as size, I guess a minimum of 12x12ft.
    Thanks for the help!

That’s a beauty! And starting at only 27K! WOO HOO! That’s exactly the amount that I thought it would cost me. I heard about this on the radio this morning and I thought that someone has way too much money if their looking at something like that.

    Oh well, Thanks,

Ok, here’s my question on this issue. I have an old boat house that now acts as a shed in my back yard. If I were to make it into an ice house for a place like Mille Lacs would I be better off with wooden skis like the link showed or metal skis. I’ve been kicking around the idea of converting this thing to an ice house. It’s well built and wouldn’t take long to insulate. Besides that, I’m tired of mowing around it. It’s a big one though. 10′ by 16′. Next question would be how to get it to the Big Pond.

Blue Fleck you can use white oak or steel skids the drawback to steel skids is the house wants to go straight and doesnt turn real well but will never wear out.If you need it moved there is a guy in Onamia that has a low boy that will haul it anywhere you want just ask any resort on Mille Lacs and they can give you his number

I used to have one with metal runners – The positive side is that it is extremely easy to bust loose – like popping ice cubes out of the old metal trays. But, like what was mentioned – It doesn’t steer very well and it does not stop real fast once you get it moving. I hit a snow drift one night and my truck stopped – but the house did not. Right into the back corner of my bumper!

Last year we had one that size hauled up from Lake City on a semi tuck flatbed. It worked great.

Anyone have an idea how much a fold up single person cedar bunk costs? 6×3′? I have one that was removed from our Glacier we want to sell but not sure what it’s worth.
