I am heading up to P9 tomorrow to do some ice fishing after work. How many of you have tried this. Instead of fishing the whole day, I’m going to try the night. I have heard that people have done well fishing this way. Any thoughts or suggestions??? I will be targeting crappie.

I’ve never tried it, but I’ve often wondered how it would work out.

The crappie bite started to slow down for us last night just before dark.
There was no reason for us to hang around so we left.
I have done good at night on crappies and there is nothing saying the bite didn’t pick back up after dark last night.
The only way a guy knows is to stick it out for a while to see what happens.
A lot of times the night bite will happen in shallow water next to were they have been cruising in the deep during the day. I like to set out a tip up with mono and a small hook and crappie minnow near the shelf then bounce around with a jig stick and my flasher.
It doesn’t hurt to move tip ups around searching for the specks, once there is a flag that won’t stay down I will set up in the area with my jig stick.
Good luck, be safe and have fun

    Bret,
I was thinking the same thing. I have 3 flags rigged up with about 6 ft. of mono and a small hook coming off regualr tip up line. I’ll punch quite a few holes in the light and then walk around and move until I can find some fish. I talked to a guy this weekend when up there fishing and he got there at 1:00 a.m. and did well around 3 am. The area is 12′ FOW with some submerged trees that I have found and marked last time I was there. It’s big and the fish do move quite a bit. We’ll see but I think it’s definately worth a try.

I have done really well fishing crappies at night on certain bodies of water. In my experience, I have found that clear water lakes will produce more at night than stained water lakes. I have noticed that the bite will slow down shortly before dark on the stained water lakes with the best bite being during daylight hours. And I agree with Bret that fish may go slightly shallower at night, but this does not mean you can not get them in the deep water basin at night. On a lake that I fish often, the best bite is at night in 38 FOW and they will bite all night long. You can fish the same spot during the day and catch fish all day long as well, but the fish are smaller during the day for some reason. Once it gets dark, the big slabs start biting in the very same spot. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Well said and I totally agree with you. I’ve especially found this to be true for me on the mississippi on pool 4 (except for catfish and eyes in certain locations)

So does this mean fishing after dark on the Miss is not worth it? I’ve never tried it, but certainly have been intrigued.

Fishing pool 8 at night has paid off sometimes. On the river is seems to be more of a time of year thing. I don’t spend time on the ice at night until February.
The river can have a good night bite.
