My close friends and I took our annual January trip to Red Lake this last weekend. Our 2007 trip was stellar producing 80 crappies, countless walleyes and a few bonus pike, so you can imagine our excitement this year. Knowing that duplicating last year would be difficult we still beleived a good walleye bite was on the horizon; unfortunately, that was not the case. The walleye bite was very slow and dead sticking was the only way to catch them. Any jigging movement with the Vexilar scared them away; however, we did pick up a few on the tipups with giant sucker minnows. Only one crappie to speak of but we were awarded with some bonus pike action. I’ll tell ya, that lake can produce some nice pike All indications were that everyone was slow. We still love the trip and will go next year. The people at Westwinds do a great job and I would highly recommend them to anyone.
