    Hi All,
I am looking to build a few 8-16 inch sight fishing rods. I am having an extremely difficult time locating the components to make a simple rod. One or 2 eyes on the rod and a cork handle is all I need. Any help would be great. I can buy them for 12-15 dollars a piece, but would like to try and make some…PRIDE…lol Thanks for all your input in advance. Ted

Can you explain the whole “Sight Ice fishing” topic, I’ve never heard of this before.

I think it’s looking down the hole when you ice fish, at least that’s what I’ve heard. I just thought that’s how everybody ice fished when I figured out how to do it. I just keep all the windows closed in my shack and drill 4 holes, drop your line down the farthest away hole and look at your jig through the closest one, fish bites and wham, redneck aqua vu.

sight fishing in shallow water is amazing. Personally i prefer a long rod for this. I stand about 3 feet away from the hole and just tickle the jig about 4 inches below the bottom of the ice hole. on a good bite, it takes about 10 seconds and a big old crappie or gill sucks it in. I do this in 2-3 feet of water in shallow weedy backwater sloughs in the later parts of the season. seems like the bite picks up in mid February and usually goes until the ice is gone. Its a fun way to fish.

There is no better rod for sight fishing than a “sweet pea” from THORNE BROS.

I’m getting the picture that you guys are talking about slightly deeper water sight fishing than I am..I can see why you would want a much shorter rod for that, sitting almost directly over the hole it gets to be a pain with a longer rod.

We can fish 2 rods so I drill 3 holes 2 about 18″ apart and center the 3rd between me and the first to holes. The 2 farthes for rods the 3rd for looking. We also sight fish up to 30 feet though. When I’m alome I drill my looking hole in the corner of the shack and use the camera instead. The 3 hole design is for when theres 2 of us.

As for rods I like at least a 20″ most mine are 24″-30″ though. Unlike most that sight fish I’m not targeting gills or crappies but perch and eyes.

    Cade,
I sight fish out of my portable down at Stoddard. It is black inside my house, so I am able to see down a few feet. This is when I am looking to use the shortest rod possible. I would like to have about 8-10 pre-rigged so I wouldn’t have to switch jig heads to see what was the winning ticket…

We have to get out during first ice this year. Do you have your drivers license yet? Ted
