I’m in the market for a new pair of bibs.
Looking for some feed back on the Carhartt Extremes for
    ice fishing. Carhartt Link
I’ve been using my regular Carhartt insulated bibs but
they are ice blocks by the end of the day.
If the Extremes don’t shed the water I don’t want to buy them.
I already have a set of Guidewear (Insulated and uninsulated Parka and uninsulated bibs) and can buy
two pairs of the Carhartts for the price of the Guidewear
    insulated bibs.
They look plenty warm I just need to know if they shed
    the water.

    Thanks,

    Dan

If your going to spend that much $$$$ I think you would be better off going with the Ice Armour. Way better than the Carhartt bibs. I thought they were being sold for around $300 for the jacket and the bibs.

I wear the Carhart Extremes for ice fishing. I think this winter will be year 4. On your knees in the slush all day and you will be wet. They also soaked thru when I wear them on the snowmobile. I sprayed them with waterproofing stuff before last winter and I was very impressed. Up and down all day hole hopping and no soaking through. I also thought about getting some ice armor or rain gear until I watched my Uncle and cousin get too close to the heater and melt a nice hole in theirs. Good luck, I’m sure I made you a little more confused.

I agree with Fife, I love my carharts and have watched several buddies melt there ice armor type outer wear. If you spray the extremes with water proofin juice you will be happy. By far the most durable bibs you’ll find! gOOD LUCK!

I have worn the older version of the extreme for about 10 years now. I spray them with camp dry or something similar every year, and this helps a ton with the water/ice problem. I have a buddy that smeared 100% silicone on the ankles and knees of his. He looks like an idiot, but it keeps the water off/out!

I’ve worn them for years, you do have to spray some sort of water protectant on them, or your knees will be wet. The sure keep you nice and warm, I really like them for that reason.

I am going to buy some ice armor this year though for one reason. Carhartt extremewear is STIFF! If you move a lot, you may want to consider something more flexable.

I’ve worn the Extremes since their inception and have been pleased overall.

In the warmth category they really stand out. I can’t imagine, nor would I want, anything warmer than these bibs.

They are made with 1000 denier Cordura, so they are very tough. The drawback for the durability is a heavier material.

When you first strap them on, you will notice how stiff they are when new. I found after one season they became quite supple.

They would come close to perfection, if they used a 600 denier Cordura and added a layer of Gore-Tex. A couple years back they made insulated bibs with Gore Tex that appeared to be only sold at Cabelas. I think that would be the ticket. I looked today and couldn’t find them.

When the weather gets cold and the ice thick, these babys really shine, I’ve never found anything that even comes close. Super waterproof and most of the time I’m only using the bibs, love’m- – – -jerr

I agree with the others also…real nice cold weather bibs, watertight for the most part. But with any of their clothing it needs to be re-treated with a water repellant. My wife is under strict instructions to NEVER wash my Carharrt coats or bibs, no matter how dirty they get!

Are the “extremes” the black bibs?

I have the Duck Bib with Artic Liner (same thing but different outer shell) and they worked great for pheasant hunting and icefishing. But as many have said prior, if you dont treat them with somekind of waterproofer they are going to be ice blocks by the end of the day icefishing. They are a little bit stiff too, so if you are a hole hopper most of the time they might not be the bib for you.

I bought a pair of Cabelas insulated, waterproof bibs and i found them to be a lot more waterproof then the carharts and about just as warm. Only drawback is that i really liked the side pliers pocket and chest pockets on the Carharts. Easy access to pliers and the ability to but my cell phone/ear piece close to my body when ice fishing for easy access and keeping it warm so the battery wouldnt lose it’s charge as fast.

They have a few styles of bibs available in black.

So to answer your question not all black bibs by Carhartt
    are the Extremes.

If you already have the Guidewear, stick with that. You cant beat the Guidewear for warmth and dryness. I do prefer the Vex Cold Snap bibs however because of the padded knees.

I don’t believe they will help you float if you break through, thats why I have Ice Armor. My Carhartts get painted with a layer of the rubber stuff you dip your tool handles in from atop of the knee all the way down and around the cuffs. Helps keep me dry when cutting wood. JMO.
