What would be your choice for a tip-up?

Form, Function, Reliability and best for the money.

I have never fished tip-ups and wanna try it this year.

I only buy polar tip ups. The orange ones that fold up neatly into a 5 gallon bucket for easy storage. they also prevent the water from freezing up as fast on those cold windy days. Also I think that covering the hole completely is more comfort for the pike when I fish just under the ice. My $0.04.

Is that the one with the round disk that covers the hole to help the hole from freezing over? This one?

That one is ok But it takes up way too much storage room. It is a nce one when the snow is deep with that long flag. I may be wrong with the name. They colapse small and stack in a 5 gallon bucket. They are round like that but not quite that large around.

Ok it is frabil tip up sorry for the confusion.

I second the Frabill. I have a dozen now, probably add 6 more this year. Love them, kept holes from skimming on Red with -20 temps and a 30mph wind. Just pack them in and forget about it until you check bait, or land a fish. The reason I have so many is cuz my friends equipment is G-A-R-B-A-G-E, life is too short to fish with sub-standard equipment. Go with the Frabil, they are the best.

    I use both.

I like to grab the top spool on the Polar and yank up to set the hooks.

I might have every kind made and still use BeaverDam the most. For cold days cut a slit and hole in extra 5 gallon bucket covers. you can still slide off and see the line in the water. Try a couple of covers with spray foam as insulation.

Polars without a doubt are the best one out on the market. Just the regular plasic ones. I’ve used tipups for alot of years fish walleyes with them everytime I go and these are the toughest, most reliable and smoothest tipups on the market. Now, I do have some of the older beaver dams and they are great too. Either of those should suit you fine.

Believe it or not, I have 44 tip-up set ups. I use Polar, just because they are affordable and reliable. The tip-up is not important to me. However, I never buy the ones that cover the entire hole. They are to bulky to carry and take up to much space in the sled. The most important part of my tip-up set-up are these things

    http://www.stonelegacy.com/icefish.html#Freezebee

The Freezebee is one of the best Ice Inventions I have come across in many years. I have been using them for 4 years now. They keep you holes open, fit most tip-ups and best of all, you can stuff about 30 of them in a 5 gallon bucket. Whatever the insulation is in them, it keeps the holes open even on the coldest days.

In addition to using them on my tip-ups. One day I had to use them on Upper Red Lake to get the crappies to bite during the day. The fish were crusing just under the ice sheet and the light coming through the hole kept the fish from biting. We tore them up using the freezebees to block the light.

This seems to be a product a lot of people don’t know about but one of those things that produces big results, especially in clear water.

Thank you Scott. Might have to add that to the arsenal this year. I have always noticed a better tipup walleye bite as soon as we get that first snow cover. These would help even if we had none.

I guess I should clarify, I got a few PM’s. The Freezebee is an Water resistant piece of insulation that slip onto ANY standard tip-up and contains a slot so that the tip-up can sit in the middle of the hole and then insulates it from freezing. The are the slickest little things and also work really nice for you guys that sit on a bucket

I have a product similar to this for my tip ups and they are pretty esential, you can also make some out of plywood and a little carpet, but the store bought ones are better

I think the beaver dam tip-up is the best out there. They last literally forever…i have some that must be 20-30 years old. That are a bit spendy, but they are really heavy duty and use zero plastic. They are my pike tip-up and work for walleye just fine too, but for eyes i prefer a different tip-up. I know they have them at Gander mountain (not sure on the brand, they are only $9.99. They are orange and shaped like a fish. They pull really smooth and easily which is why they are great for eyes. They also have a big T on them which is nice because you can see if the fish is taking line from a long ways away.

I like the Beaver Dam tip-ups also. I always know they will work. I don’t get out as much as I’d like, I have a kid in hockey, so I need to know that they’ll be ready to go.
