Just looking for a few opinions here. I have march 3rd through the 12 off from school and a couple buddies and i are thinking of maybe doing a three day fishing trip somewhere. We were thinking of maybe mille lacs, url, or red wing. So if you could do a three day fishing trip what would be your top choice? Thanks

I would go to Winnie for perch if the reports were good.

Those are some tough choices and its going to depend on weather but I would have to say URL would be my first choice but that bite is really hit or miss if you dont have reliable information and its a long drive. The Perch on Mille lacs should be biting well. You can also fish the tourney at Red Wing on March 5th.

If the weather is supposed to be nice then Red Wing. My next choice would be LOW.

well depending on the perch reports id hit winnie, but don’t rule out good ole devils lake, have you ever been there?? its a great trip and there is a casino right there if the fish don’t bite!!!! but in early march it is usually a great place to go especially for percha nd walleye they have also got some real nice pike out of there as well. just my opinion! good luck

If I had 3 days in early March to fish and was looking for adventure, which I usually am, I would leave all your friends here on IDA and all the crowds on Millelacs, Winni, URL, and LOW and book a trip with Bill Slaughter up in Ely! We’d use dog-sleds to go into Basswood Lake, set-up a nice comfortable camp, and fish for giant pike….all by ourselves! The big gators really go on the chew this time of year, it’s open season on Basswood, Bill’s one of the best in the business, and all your friends will still be here when you get back. Hey, if I had my choice, that’s what I would do.

Thanks alot for the help guys. As of right now we are leaning towards mille lacs since its not quite as far as lotw and url and the casino is pretty close too. I think we are gonna stay in a motel close to the lake and fish out of our portables. Any recommendations for hotels in the area that are decent, and which resort would you go out of? Thanks again

I have a question about the fishing ban on mille lacs. Is it only closed to walleye after February 19? If so does this mean that they still allow fishing for perch after that date? Just wondering before we finalize anything. Thanks guys

Eelpout are also open year ’round
    AND
In Mille Lacs, you’re much more likely to catch perch and pout than sunnies and crappies.

Thanks again for the help guys. Looks like we will be up there from March 8-12th trying to get some of those mille lacs jumbos im seeing pictures of all the time I think we will go out of hunters and we will have a four wheeler just in case the ice isnt thick enough for a vehicle. I have never ice fished up there before so i was wondering what types of lures we should pick up before we get there. Any certain areas we should start at that might yield some fish? Thanks

I have been doing my best with either the smallest jigging spoons you can find with either a minnow head or waxies, or with a small jig like an ant of or fatboy, with waxies, this has been most productive for me.

Thanks alot for the help. I cant wait, we will be live next wednesday march 8 and will return on Sunday the 13th. Is there a certain part of the lake that produces more perch that others where we can get somewhat of a starting point? Any certain depths to look for and what are some of the popular jigging spoons you guys use for perch? Thanks guys, i will be sure to give a report of each day when we return

Myr Mar was OK last week. I lived up to my name and landed 8 Pout, of course after they molested my aqua-view. Lots of small perch to pick through but did well on the larger fish at about 11 am and about 4 pm. Small buckshot or forage minnow tipped with a head did well, 28 FOW. The biggest fish came on a dead stick with a plain hook & minnow. ( 13 in. fatty )
Hope this helps, good luck. the 12s and 13s make it worth the trip.
