Look at some of the prize money that was given out…

15-ounce perch earns Pelican angler $25,000
    Feb. 6, 2006

A yellow perch was worth over $1,600 an ounce for a Shawano man Saturday.

Michael Erdmann captured the $25,000 prize for the largest fish, a 15-ounce perch, in the huge Pelican Lake Ice Fishing Tournament, which turned the ice-covered Guth’s Bay into a miniature city over the morning and afternoon hours.

“We were extremely happy,” Jason Swartz, tournament organizer, said. “Everything went extremely well.”

The tournament featured over $100,000 in cash and prizes with anglers from throughout the Midwest. Entry fee was $40 per hole with a three hole limit. Total payout was $106,500.

Swartz said there were over 2,200 anglers, and when you include the vendors, family, friends, and security, the total number of people on the ice was well over 3,000. Organizers drilled 3,200 holes for the event.

“We really have to thank the Pelican Lake fire department for all their help with parking and safety,” Swartz said. “They did just a super job making sure there were no problems.”

Swartz also cited Mike Christian of Pelican Lake for his assistance with parking, a critical area when you consider the thousands of cars, trucks and SUVs that covered the ice, and lined nearby roadways.

The event raised funds for a variety of local organizations. The Pelican Lake Little League earned $650; Elcho High School wrestling, $1,460; and Elcho-Pelican Lake Lioness Club, $1,000. The totals for the Antigo Lions Club, Hodag Sno-Trails and the Charles McAdams benefit are not yet tallied.

Rounding out the top 10 finishers were:

    ‹Michael Bukovic, Hiles, 11 oz. perch, $20,000.

‹Kenneth Carothers, Argonne, 11 oz. perch, registered a minute after Bukovic’s fish, $15,000.

‹David Lamers, Beaver Dam, 9 oz. perch, $10,000.

    ‹Douglas Kruzitski, Plover, 9 oz. perch, $7,500.

    ‹Jim Brock, Arpin, 8 oz. perch, $5,000.

    ‹John Hart, Athens, 7 oz. perch, $2,500.

    ‹Brian Enright, Campbellsport, 7 oz. perch, $1,000.

‹Clark Cramer, Eau Claire, 7 oz. perch, $700.

    ‹Jason Giese, Cecil, 7 oz. perch, $500.

Anglers in 11th through 30th place each received Jiffy ice drills.

There were also drawings for fishing trips, ice shelters and fishing kits.

That’s nuts. I think I’d still risk it…it was warmer this winter than it has in the past few years that it took place.

    Yikes!
