I wanted to measure the depth of the ice this weekend….but forgot I would have to guess around 24 inches + – alittle!! it’s still less than what we would normally have on the lake at this time. We should have 30 + inches give or take!!!

With that said, I still think we are going to have an early ice out!!

I do have a little open water now just off shore! We have been having a NE wind for sometime now pushing it SW. I would guess it should start moving around in a week or so. Close to my pick of the 14th………..I’ll keep ya posted

    Bobber:

We lost a lot of our ice in the Minocqua area yesterday and I would think that we could be ice free by the weekend!!! We are close to the same latitude to the east of you. I just saw the last page of posts and so this probably isn’t as timely as it would have been from the 2nd page.

Since the ice-out seems to be a bit early this year, along with many other lakes, what is that going to do for the spawn? Do you think we will have a good year class?

Its all going to depend on weather for the rest of the spring. The early spring will trigger an early spawn. Once the eggs are dropped and hatched, it will be up to stable water temps and wind for survival. If we get some very cold nights and stormy weather, it could hurt the year class. Mother Nature will do what shes gotta do..

Derek, Is right as to the need for good weather!! I have had years where the spawn is thick in the rocks out front. It needs warmer temp’s and calm winds…no big wind storms!!! Today the water temp’s were 41-42 deg’s out on the main lake. We have calm winds and a fairly warm forecast for the coming week! Looks good for walleye spawning……..also looks to good for the natives to get out and get their netting done!
