DNR posts new ice fishing podcast (2006-01-10)

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has produced a second ice fishing show available for downloading either as a podcast or a simple audio file that may be listened to on computers connected to the Internet. The term “podcast” comes from the name of the player made popular by Apple Computer, but the show can be listened to on most portable audio players and almost any home computer.

Titled “Mid-winter Ice Fishing Tips,” the 30-minute program deals with how to fish on the ice safely during January and February. The show features ice fishing guru Terry Tuma and DNR ice safety specialist Tim Smalley. The show host is Steve Carroll of the DNR.

“Terry covers bait selection, time of day, how the weather effects ice fishing, and locating the fish. I give some driving and parking on the ice dos and don’ts,” Smalley said.

The DNR Web site tallied a healthy number of listeners to the first show. “We had about 2,500 downloads of the first one we did which was posted during the last two weeks of December,” Smalley said. “The second show was downloaded 250 times in just three days after it became available. We’re pretty happy with the results for something that has just kicked off.”

Podcasts are a cost-effective way of using technology to deliver ice fishing information. “The only expense involved with producing the podcasts were a couple hours of staff time,” Smalley said.

Smalley thinks these are the first podcasts ever produced on ice fishing and perhaps the first podcast of any kind done by a state agency.

“I haven’t heard from any of my counterparts in other Minnesota agencies or other agencies across the country that had already done one,” Smalley said. “When they see how well this is working, I think there will be more.”
