How do you MN guys attach and preserve your shelter IDs? My old method didn’t work too well and I need to get it done soon.

I wasn’t clear…talking about a portable flip over. Doubt if paint will work.

    Anyone have a good solution?

I use an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper and print out my driver license number in the biggest font that will fit. Then I stick the shelter tag to that piece of paper and slip it in a 8 ½ x 11 sheet protector. Then I slip that into the sleeve on my Otter. If you don’t have a sleeve, just use some diaper pins to attach it to your canvas.

I don’t use my drivers license number anymore. From what I have read about identity theft, your drivers license number can put you at risk. The fishing regulations allow you to use your MN DNR license number. I think it is an 8 or 9 digit number sequence that you will find on your fishing / hunting license. I do like Jon except I buy the 2″ stick-on numbers at WalMart and just stick them on a plain cardboard backing and insert them in the sleeve on my Eskimo QuickFlip. They are easy to see and seem to handle the weather extremes pretty well.

I’ve got 3 different size portables that I can use depending on conditions and who else is coming fishing. I buy one shelter license and I laminate it onto a baggage tag like you use for your suitcases. Then I just attach that tag to the door zipper of the house I am using that day. I’m too cheap to buy three shelter tags – that whole shelter tags for portables is a rip-off in my opinion. I fish the St Croix a lot and a shelter tag is not needed on border waters anyway.

Is this true on the Mississippi as well? Even if my fishing license is from MN?

Yes, that is correct as long as you are on “Border Water”. Meaning south of the confluence where the Mississippi and St Croix meet.

This is the WI / MN border waters definition taken directly from the 2005 Minnesota Fishing Regulations on page 63:
Mississippi River (downstream of Prescott, Wisconsin and all water between the Burlington Northern (Wisconsin) and Chicago Milwaukee (Minnesota) railroad tracks), Lake Pepin, St Croix River, Lake St Croix, St. Louis River, St. Louis Bay, and Superior Bay.

So if you are fishing the Mississippi – stay south of Prescott and between the railroad tracks and you should be good to go without a fishing shelter license. The regulation does state: “Fish houses must comply with the identification requirements of the state for which the angler is licensed.” So that means you still need your complete name and address OR driver’s license number OR MN DNR number of the owner plainly and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least 2 inches in height.

Thanks Steve. I was having a brain (imagine the sound) and confusing a shelter license and the ID requirements. Your info made it clear.

No driver license number for me either….DNR license number printed on white paper rapped in clear tape and inserted in the provided Clam corp sleeve.
