Today my son & a friend of mine were fishing a small lake close to home.We noticed that some of the bluegills & sunfish looked funny. The tails & some of the fins looked bloody. The tails looked a lot like a largemouth
bass at spawning time. I’ve never seen fish that looked like this before. Is there something wrong with the fish? Maybe water? What’s up?

    Were you really shallow?

I’ve seen this also at Pinnicon Ridge through the ice, and a couple of other places as well, usually shallow backwaters on rivers. I don’t know that it’s unusual, but it is a little spooky when you pull a bloody fish through the hole.

When it happened to me, I was shallow enough, and it’d been after a week long cold snap, and was only on the thin parts of the fins, which made me think it might be the fish version of frostbite?

The water was shallow. about 2′ to 2 1/2′. 8″ to 9″ of ice.
    Thanks.
