Another morning, another location. Today we headed out towards some back bays behind 7th st. landing. With a little phone direction help from myself, Crawford Managed to find the place as he, myself, Watson, BlueFleck, Blue’s Pop, JohnL and MattH decided to hit things up.

We were fishing in 16-20+ feet of water, and all fish were hugging the bottom. We weren’t catching them left and right, but the ones were were getting were almost all eater size. We were using the Hook and run method to get some nice gills and crappie. John even managed a small Bass. We were seeing plenty of Bass and Monster Northerns through the Aqua View as well…but no takes on the tip-ups.

We called it a day when the Ice/Rain/Sleet/freezing pebbles started to fall….I think JC is stuck here in LAX for the day. Didn’t take many pictures today, but here is one of “RON” Jeremy Crawford w/a crappie

It was nice to go out and try new areas for a change. This week we have fished in 3 different spots and all were very good and had there own qualities. While we didn’t pound them today, the quality of the fish was outstanding. It was also nice to get together with the other guys and b.s. and have a good time. We could have done without the ice, but it is winter time .

By the way…. Out of all the guys fishing AM Watson and papa fleck seemed to outfish everyone else… I have been around the block long enough to know that is was all about the quality of angler.. You guys are top notch.. Or at least I think. If you are average then I just plain suck… Thanks for the lesson. Can we all say Flirty Girty.
I made it home from La Crosse in the ice storm and say that anyone else traveling was even dumber than I and that is a huge feat. Later.

We got the call from JohnL this afternoon and he said the bite was Still On @ 7th St. Bay. So Wats and I met him down there for some more EXCELLENT ACTION . We moved spots from yesterday into some deeper water (20ft.) The crappie bite had picked up and we were catching good eater size crappies. Once again, we were catching some BULL gills We were using swedish pimples, tiny jiggin’ raps, and forage minnows, and they were all working .

Wats was a crappie catching machine , as he was working these fish on the Vex very intensly….They were suspending anywhere from 10ft-16ft….It depended on what school moved through. They would really follow your lures as well…You wouldn’t have caught these fish w/o using a vex…that’s for sure.

Hard to see picture, but there’s a nice mess of Crappies there

JC, I’m sorry to hear you’re only catching 6″ ‘gills down there, b/c there are plenty of 8-10″ ‘gills still up here if you can make it back up!!!

Here I am w/a nice crappie and a 9″ gill that also had a 9″ girth…(he was so thick I had to check)

Fishing has never been so good to me on the ice Today, I was picky and only wanted to target the crappie, but the bull gills were suspended in with the crappies. It is a blast when you see the fish suspended, then they slam the jig. You could really tell the gill bite from the crappie by watching the line. The crappie almost always hit up and the line would go slack, the gills slammed and pulled down. That gill of Slop’s was huge . I attached another pic of the biggest gill I caught.

Some nice gills and crappie. A lot of fish were suspended, but biting very light.

Fished today with Johnl and it appears the well has runneth dry . Very few fish caught by us but ended up with half a dozen keeper sized crappie. I had a dead stick with a red hook using minnows. A few small crappie took the offering, but the bites were few and far between. We also got checked by our friendly conservation officer . It appears somebody was really into the crappie, because they got escorted off the ice to receive an over the limit ticket John heard more of the conversation than I did so I am not sure how many he had. The word must have gotten out because there were a bunch of people out there. There were 5 guys that came out together and set up camp less than 10 feet away . Time to find a new “secret” spot

I talked to John and he said the guy had 5 over his limit and was still fishing. The CO took the fish and made him take his shack down and meet him in the parking area. The guy told the CO that he “thought” he was close to his limit, but never counted them BUSTED

Well – I tried it one more time this weekend, and to put it in a good way it was slow. I spent the whole day moving around in and out of people looking for crappies. The total for the day was 3. people count ~83. It was fun while it lasted.
