I can’t speak for TUCR but I definitely want to try them! As for thorne bros, I feel that the perch sweetheart is the ideal perch and walleye rod because it fishes 1/16 and 1/8 ounce spoons perfectly, which is what I use most for perch, walleyes, and even crappies. I own a medium walleye sweetheart as well, which is what I use for 1/4 to 3/8 ounce spoons or jigs. I enjoy fighting fish on lighter rods, so I also prefer the perch sweetheart because it’s much more fun to fight a walleye on as well! Hope I helped!

I have a LOT of rods…I own a TUCR qt and an older sweeheart that’s 32″. The qt has a softer tip but more backbone than the sweetheart. Even the precision has more backbone. I do like the sweetheart as it seems to have that perfect total parabolic bend throughout the whole rod. Again, I love my TUCRs and am in no way bashing them, but I also have a 28″ DH Perch Pounder that I swear is either the same blank or nearly the same as it has the same total bend throughout the rod. I know it’s not a perfect science, but have tried to hold on two the sweetheart and DH at the same time and they’re nearly identical when loaded as far as the bend. Hope this helps.

I really like the TUCR. A great ice rod and they do very good work.

If you use up to 1/4 spoons and jigs(or larger) you will prefer the precision, if you spend more time using 1/16 and 1/8 oz jigs look into the Quick tip. Last day of trout fishing the other day we hit some rainbows in the afternoon/evening after fishing Lakers that morning. I had my new quick tip rigged up with an 1/8 oz spoon until they stopped biting those, then I downsized to a 1/12 and got more action, but later had to downsize to a 1/32 jig as they wouldn’t take anything larger than that, the QT gave me perfect control over each bait as well as more than enough backbone needed to bring in a fat 20″ ‘Bow that fought like an alligator! I’ve used my precision for everything from Perch to Lake Trout, jigging 1/16th oz spoons up to 1 ounce jigs. I’ve caught 3 inch splake and perch on it and felt/saw them bite, as well as pulled in 10 Lb Lakers, handled perfectly by the backbone in the rod. However, I prefer the sensitivity and action with the QT on the smaller spoons/jigs.
I haven’t used the TB rods so I have no comparison, but I hope this helps.

I have a 36 qt and love it for lures up to 1/8. Then I have a 36 qt-2 for lures larger than 1/8. I jigged a 1 ounce tube jigs for lakers on the same rod. Love them both

I have two precisions and two perch sweethearts, but they aren’t the same lengths. My TB’s are 28 & 32 whereas my TUC are 36″. The TUC’s are my go to rods, they seem perfect for smaller lures like 1/16 and 1/8 ounce jigs and work on bigger ones. The TB’s are really nice, but seem to be a tad too soft for my preference when pounding jigs rattle spoons. Could be because they are shorter, but hard to say. Based on what I have I prefer TUC’s, but take it with a grain of salt as I wasn’t comparing the same length rods.

I own several of both in a variety of lengths. They both do a great job with 1/16-1/8oz spoons…..in fact Pat Smith used to call the Perch Sweetheart the 1/8oz spoon rod. The tough part in comparing the two is that the taper and speed of the action is different for different lengths. In other words, recommendations between a 28″ Sweetheart and a 28″ TUCR Precision would be different than in a 32″ or 36″ comparison of the same models.

Overall, I feel that the TUCR Precision has a slightly faster action for the shorter end of the spectrum and are more similar in the 32″ and 36″ versions. The 36″ versions for both get softer tips, which some people like, and others don’t. In other words, we’re getting to the point where personal preference may outweigh other considerations.

There’s a strong used market for both rods, so buy with confidence and try out a few if it’s within your budget. As long as you take care of them, you can always sell them for a decent price, and learn what works best for you and the style you fish along the way.

I, for example, favor longer rods with faster actions than I did 5 years ago, but I don’t like all of them longer, and with the exception of pike/laker rods, 36″ is as far as I tend to want to go. Even then, that’s usually only when standing and hole hopping aggressively, and not with heavier lures. All of my rods have the recoil guides, and I prefer a split and/or smaller grip. As mentioned, these are the preferences I’ve come to, and much is just based on personal preference.

The best part about any custom rod? You get to choose!
