How was your hard water season?

Had a fare year myself. Didn’t hit the perch as hard as I would have liked but did have a decent run of walleyes thru out the season. Pulled the plug on the season couple days early but to be honest the ice season finally was able to burn me out. Really I guess over 4 months scratched the itch. All the brutal temps didn’t help. Did manage to add these two big boys the last two times out with the rest of the days catch. Pretty happy to see 21-22 inch males this healthy on my favorite body of water to fish

Will be ready for the ice again in about 8 months.

Sounds like you had a great season to me!

My season was great for numbers, but not much for size like in years past. We have a very strong year class of 9″ crappies it seems, and the 12″+ were down this year.

Glad to see you were satisfied with your season. I was pretty much bored out of my mind. Way too much of the same old things in the same place. Had little to no variety this year.

I had a pretty good winter considering the weather too. I tried out a new lake and did pretty well on some walleyes throughout the winter. Excited to get out there in the boat this summer and continue the action.

I had hoped to hit more remote areas up around our cabin. Deep snow hampered that as I don’t have a sled. Frustrating to be held back like that, won’t happen with the boat though!

This is my first year of keeping track of fish caught, hours fishing, etc…So far in i’m over 800 fish in 2014 and have 540+ in march alone. Several 100 fish days, 40 fish days are becoming “Slow fishing”

After mid Feb i mostly concentrated on panfish rather than walleyes. I’ve never had such good sunfish fishing in my entire life. One afternoon in 3 hours i caught 60 sunfish, and 20 of them were over 9″ long, measured. 8″ sunfish are becoming small in my eyes.

Best three days of fishing this months was a 6 hours combined across 3 days of fishing, and two different lakes. In those 6 hours i caugh 223 fish. It’s been out of this world great, and i’ve had the lakes entirely to myself the entire month.

Buying a 1-Man flipover increased my movability. When chasing these pan fish i’ve learned that it’s better to be incredibly mobile and to constantly move until you hit a hole that constantly putting out fish.

I’ve all but swiss cheesed a few areas of the lakes i’ve been fishing. 12-15 paces between holes, drill drill drill, then quickly move from hole to hole.

A large and Loud lure has helped me find lots of fish. Dropping a northland live forage rippin shad down the hole will bring in lots of panfish to look. Dropping down a tungsten shortly after they show up will surely make for a few bites.

1st year i’m actually a little disappointed winter is ending but i’m also ready to break out the big fish gear. Before you know it, i’ll be searching for panfish to use for bait

I’ll be transitioning away from panfish to catfish/sturgeon & walleye in the next few weeks.

This year was a challenge for me. It was generally a very slow winter from 1st ice up until 3 weeks ago. Becuase some of my normal places were slow, I started trying a few new lakes and type of ice fishing. I learned quite a bit so that made it seem better. Even had a few firsts for me, got my first walleye thru the ice on my home lake (traditionally a bad lake for walleyes in winter) and learned how to catch perch in 80ft of water

My season started off earlier then it has before but slowed to a crawl after new years. It was busiest winter I have had at work in years which didn’t leave me with much time to fish.

My ice season got cut short my a total knee replacement…

I fished as much as I could stand before the replacement and then once the recovery came to really working the knee I was on the ice…

New tools such as the TUCR Quick Tip was a lot of fun while catching Monster Crappies in Kansas !!! Mongo Perch on LOTW and some pretty nice fish right here in my own back yard…

I even got to use my new Otter XT1200… How nice is that !!! I didn’t even need a heater a few of the times !!!

Pug Bugs and the mustache worm were my best producers for gills and crappies…

Really looking forward to the next ice season… but as hard as this one was.. I’m not in too big a hurry

it was the best year in a very long time but then it was good ice early and stayed late, my partner and I started wright after the perch from day one and we worked hard very hard most days 100 / 150 holes, drill, fish, move, repeat. learned more this year on perch patterns than I have in the last 10 years, funny how you can get set in your ways and over look the obvious and how much a good partner can help when you push each other. I could only fish home waters this year as I was either on the ice or at the doctors (skin cancer ) but life is all good now we will see if what I learned this year works next ice season ?

    Jeff,

My first was a gold thread, 5ft fast action graphite with rec guides and cork handle, matched it up with the Black Betty. This was by far my bread and butter, very light and balanced with the capability to land big fish with that smooth drag. My second was a 5.5ft E glass spun up the same way. Very soft, slow rod but an absolute blast to land fish with. This was a good one when using cecils, tinglers etc. for crappies. Using 3lb.braid you could double that rod over big time on the hook set then let the rod do it’s work to tire them out. The tug IS the drug Dave but with the glass stick the hook set became addictive.

I may be one of the few, but I’m not ready to call it a season yet with the best panfishing of the year yet to come… But I will say that even if it ended today it’s already been an AWESOME year!

The crazy weather and brutal conditions for both travel and catching fish on my home waters of Mille Lacs forced me to spend more time searching for new opportunities and it paid off with some awesome fishing that I may have missed had I been chasing the walleyes that I usually focus on mid-winter. Looking back it may have been a blessing in disguise as I added a brand new addiction to chasing lakers through the ice that wouldn’t even have been possible on a normal year as the crazy ice conditions allowed us to places that might only be fishable once every 10 years.

Not only did I add a to my repertoire, but I was also able to take time to add a few tricks chasing familiar fish as one my goals for the year was to filling in holes in my panfish game and spend time building confidence in plastics… Goal accomplished! Focusing on using the new Trigger X mustache worm and Nypmh once once I found some active fish not increased my catch rate, by not having to re-bait as frequently, but it also significantly bumped up the average size of my catch as I didn’t have to weed through as many smaller fish to get to the big ones.

Then spending a week up on LOTW with Koonce, Joel, James, Cal, Pat, Bryan, Ben, & Ben catching BEAST pike on rods was like the cherry on top of a sundae… I’m already adding a couple TUC glass laker rods to my wish list for next year!

I am definitely not satisfied with this ice season yet but its my favorite time to hit the ice and the way the bite is around me right now I cant wait to spend more time on the ice. I cant say it was all bad the travel was tough and there was a lot more time spent in the Otter Cabin than most years, but one of the highlights for me was helping out a high school ice team which was a great experience. I also pulled a personal best Pike through the ice this winter so all in all it wasn’t to bad, and has the potential to really end with a bang.

I spent a lot of time finding new water for eelpout this year, and although it wasn’t fantastic, I would say I’ve learned a lot.

The panfish bite has been mediocre since the beginning of the ice season, but I am one of those that are still looking forward to another couple of ice fishing trips before the season closes! Hopefully the last trips will make the highlight reel!

I wasn’t very happy with this ice season until Superior was fishable, then the addiction started…Lakers are by far my new favorite fish to fish for…I haven’t really fished panfish much this winter since my first trip on the ice, which consisted of a ton of 13-14″crappies… So I’m hoping late ice will be as good if not better…If this damn snow will quit in Duluth!!!

One word, Long! Spent 4 months on the ice. Way to much time clearing snow around the shack. I did enjoy using my new LX-7 all season though. This was the longest ice season I have had. Shack was on the ice the 13th of December. I just did my last day on the ice Wednesday.

Despite the really harsh conditions this season we all had to roll with the punches and make the best of it. In my opinion it was a fantastic season. I expanded my borders with trying some new lakes, caught the biggest walleye of my life in my own backyard, found some quality multi species panfish, developed some better finess techniques for finicky bull gills, found big walleyes on a lake that has previously been labeled as a “Dead Sea”, and took a youth group of kids out to catch their first ever fish through the ice. All in all this will be a season to remember for me.
