I’ve used this type of rig for crappie and tullibee with success. I generally use a silver kastmaster spoon, since the tullibee love the flash in clear water.

I would go with a shorter and heavier dropper line, something like a 3″ 10lb fluoro and tie a small clip to the end like a Northland Quick Snap so you can change jigs without retying.

If it’s too long, it will tangle with the main line and if it’s too light, there’s a better chance of the dropper breaking before the main line because of the shock/abrasion on that small piece of line. Just IMO, though. Hope this helps, good luck.

I use a dropper off a spoon usually only in deeper water or with finicky fish. When the bite is really tough, esp. in water over 20 feet, it’s nice to use a heavier spoon that cuts water instead of flutters, like that Kastmaster or Flash Champ. You get the bait down quickly and keep the attention of the school, yet you’re not forced to fish heavy/fast with the clunkiness of a big spoon. Typically in this scenario I’ll fish with spikes, but to attract ‘eyes too, you’d probably want to use a piece of minnow. Either the head or a section of tail.

I like using floro in this situation, mostly because it’s stiff, it sinks, and can’t be seen. You won’t get as good of action, but will still get a modified neutral bouyancy on the business end which’ll get fish to commit when other approaches won’t. I usually only run mono on a dropper when using weightless soft hackle flies for gills.

If ‘eyes are in the picture, make sure to check that leader after each fish. Repeated fish on floro lighter than 8-10lb will abrade that leader.

Good luck, let us know how it works!
