Does anyone know if the Ion augers cut through ice when it’s really thick like at LOW right now ? I’ve heard they are great with 2 feet of ice. How are 12 volt augers ?

Watched a guy with an ION on Devils Lake Saturday – punched 2 holes down to the handles (w/extension) without any problems – slower RPM than most gas augers but didn’t seem to slow down at all while cutting.

Have no idea if they were the first 2 holes of the day or not on that battery pack – lots of moving around looking for active perch.

It does cut slower, but I was able to do it. I cleared the snow once while drilling each hole. I cut 10 holes one day in 40″+ of ice and it still had a charge.

So how long does it take to cut a hole?

My solo is cutting a hole in 8-12 seconds depending on ice hardness and depth. 8 seconds when it’s a wet hole and up to 12 seconds when it’s solid dry ice.

Them electrics look twice as slow.

For ice houses (ice castle’s/permanent’s, etc) you can’t beat them. My buddy has one that we use at Mille Lacs for our shack. Nothing beats being able to keep the doors closed and drilling a hole, and not having to air it out for a while.

    Battery storage is key.

If you’re looking to hole hop and be portable, I’d look at something else.

It’s a little slower than my solo, but if we are driving to a way point and setting up the house its faster to use ion to pop 4 holes than start my solo, wait a minute to warm up.

Electric is the ‘way to go’ with wheel houses, but i don’t think they measure up for the guy who drills holes all day in search of fish.

We bring two augers on trips to Devils and lakes where we will be on the move. My buddy has an Ion and I have a Strikemaster.
