Video Details: Season 8 – Episode 17. Ice Fishing. James Holst and In-Depth Outdoors Pro Staffer Pat McSharry fish Lake Superior for hard-fighting lake trout. Ice conditions on Lake Superior rarely allow for more than very brief periods of fish-able ice. The frigid temps experienced in 2014 did come with a benefit as it provided anglers with access to a hot lake trout bite that was easily accessible on foot with only the most basic gear.

It’s a tough call with all the other great shows I’ve seen this crew produce, but I think it is safe to say this is my favorite episode to date! I absolutely love fishing for Lake Trout, best fight one could ask for. It is also nice seeing some of my personal favorite baits hooking into those fish. I usually have one rod rigged up with a Trigger X Tube and the other with a Rippin Rap, but never have I seen so many Lakers brought up in such a short time! You guys just killed it out there! James, you have fished through an incredibly difficult season this year and your perseverance has been an inspiration to me to say the least, but seeing your excitement laying into each fish during this episode has me proud to say that you have earned it!
Congratulations Pat on your debut with IDO, you rocked it out there! I will be looking forward to next week’s show for sure!

Very fun to watch! I liked the “comin in hot” knee slide.

James, I was looking at the rod you were using and it looks like an open water pole snapped off at a guide, is that correct?

    Great show

I was wondering the same thing. Also, just how “safe” is something like this for a novice? Seems like you just walked out from shore, popped some holes and….bam! Do you expect the ice there will be safe for awhile?

I would call Marine General in Duluth to try and get a ice report. Conditions are changing daily depending on winds, so calling a head is a great idea.

I thought I heard “whuppin stick” mentioned at the beginning. Could be an open water whuppin stick cut down.

Looked a lot like a Thorne Bros Pro Glass to me.

    Sweet show to watch!

Is it common for that many of the fish to have lamprey marks? Would you eat one with a lamprey mark? Wonder if it’s just gross looking or is it bad for you to do so.

How much longer will that ice hold up looks pretty thin for me from the video.

The ice is 10-15in depending on where you go…That day at that spot I believe it was 15in…But as said above its a big lake it changes a lot…Im going out tomorrow so I’ll give an update on the ice…

Wow this is episode is awesome. Reminds me 99% of Lake Simcoe in Ontario. Walk out 200m or so, get over 70-100fow, and the trout are all for the taking. Come up here when you guys get a chance!

Looks like the trout on Superior fight a lot harder than the ones on Simcoe though. Some claim that the stocked trout on Simcoe don’t fight very hard, and I often am capable of horsing them up on 6-8lb line.
