Hot Perch bite on Winnie

Just a heads up for anyone looking for a bite this weekend…there’s a really good jumbo perch bite going right now on Lake Winnie on the south shore and it would make the perfect bite if you’re looking to get your kids in on some fast action.

Start in 12′ of water in the AM, move to 16′ by late morning and by 1 PM head to deep water (25’+) to stay on the fish. We fished yesterday and had “a fish on every drop” action for several hours in the morning and steady action throughout with many fish running in the 11″ – 12″ range. Our biggest fish of the day was just short of 13″.

1/8 oz. Tumbler spoons in Perch were the ticket tipped with a bunch of red spikes. Travel conditions on the lake were good out of Nodaks Lodge. We drove out in the diesel… left the sleds at home which makes for a very easy travel day. Temps hit 48 degrees so obviously there was some water on the ice but overall not bad at all.

If you go, don’t forget the auger extension. You don’t need it for all holes but there’s some areas where you’ll be out of luck if you don’t have one.

Man did it feel good to fish in the sun and warm temps and to have the fish smacking baits. To all that still have there ice gear ready to go… have fun and be safe regardless of where you fish. If you do head to Winnie, give Nodak’s a call for the latest info on conditions before hitting the ice. Everything I just shared, while timely, should be reinforced with current info if you plan to hit the ice.

Thanks for the report James. Were you able to access the whole lake with your truck? Or were there areas you had to avoid?

We were limited to staying on plowed roads. There’s still a LOT of snow in spots that would eat a truck whole. That will change as we get more warm weather but as of yesterday there was no way to get a truck very far off a plowed road without getting stuck.

I’ve heard good things about Leech right now and obviously Winnie was pretty good. As far as Leech goes, the Hardwoods and Goose Island Flats are kicking out good fish. I’ve heard the size is a little better than Winnie right now but that’s just hear say.

I’ll tell you right now, my gold #2 Jigging rap and minnow head did not out produce James ……Red Spikes and a Tumber is the way to go. I was using the yellow perch pattern and after seeing what 90% of the Jumbo perch had in their bellies, it was a wise choice!

A ton of sorting going on. You could catch 10-6″ perch in a row and then stick a jumbo out of the same hole. However, when the big ones would come in, they would hammer it!

Ya’ have to appreciate a fish that will hit a spoon with half a minnow still sticking out of its throat from its last meal.

Leaving tomorrow evening for 3 days of bliss on Winnie! Thanks for the info! Did you guys try any smaller lakes? Wondering what conditions are like on them?

Sorry, no. We stuck to Winnie yesterday and didn’t get to check in on any other lakes.

With sleds you could go anywhere. The snow is/was still very deep in some areas so I could see getting a wheeler stuck but if you were careful you’d likely be able to go most anywhere. We did see wheelers out running around but didn’t see them do any extensive off-roading first hand.

So is yesterday’s adventure going to be on this weeks show? I assume not, this close to Sunday. But if it is, we will have to see if Becker’s can record it so we can watch it Sunday night after hitting the lake all day!
