Video Details: Season 8 – Episode 16. Ice Fishing. James Holst and In-Depth Outdoors Pro Staffer Will Roseberg fish Central Minnesota for panfish as warmer weather starts to loosen winter’s icy grip on the Ice Belt. The severe winter has piled up several feet of snow on top of 3+ feet of ice causing low oxygen levels which present a unique challenge to anglers.

Great show guys, it’s nice to see how you handled the conditions and worked out a strategy to get some tough fish on the ice!

Nice show. Definitely rejuvenated me to want to get right back out on the ice until it’s gone. I’ve been interested in moving into those in-line reels. Which one did you use? I know there’s not too many out yet to choose from but I’ve never held one yet myself and looking for tips on buying and using them. Are they mostly for panfish or does anyone use them for bigger species?

I fished a shallow place yesterday. I also noticed the fish were very high up. They were like 2-3 ft. sometimes 4 down. Good show.

Great show, learned a lot. Will definitely have to try the top 1/3rd of the water column next time I’m out for crappies.

James will walleye behave the same way in water with low oxygen levels

Glad I watched the program before I hit the lake yesterday. As a rookie ice angler I tend to ignore the top 1/3 of the water column. But, on your advice, I trusted that they were up there and did very well. The fish I marked, I caught. But had to lay it right on their nose to get them to bite.

When the crappie shut off I did drop down and pull a few nice gills off the bottom. Even caught a bullhead on a spoon. Haven’t caught one of them since I was fishing drop lines with a crawler off the bottom 25 years ago.
