I have the FL20 and love it, I did have a marcum LX3 for a few weeks but returned it for the vex. I think the new FL28 is good in shalow water but I’m sure somebody will let you know for sure. I would buy one soon as the end of season sales happen, might save yourself a $100 or more. Good luck
I’ve had nothing but good luck with any Vex I’ve owned. My FLX-28 is no exception. Pick your budget & buy accordingly.

28 is going to be the BEST, but you’re going to pay for it.
12 and 20 will be equally good for shallow water.
If you’re only fishing shallow water, I’d get a 12 with the 19 degree transducer.
I have been using the Vex FL22HD with the Triducer 8, 12 and 20 degree cone for 4 years. It was replaced with the FL28 this year. Never had any problems with the unit and user friendly. I added the digital depth read this year and that was a very nice addition. I have not used or been around the Marcum LX 6,7, and 9.
If you tighten the two mounting screws on the side of the bracket too tight it will make some noise but if you leave them somewhat loose I don’t notice any noise.
I have a couple 28`s and a 22 with the tri-beam transducer. I like the 22 better in shallow water.

And I bet the 28 has the proview transducer. NO matter what unit you have, the 19 degree or tribeam transducer are going to give you the best performance in shallow water.
FL18 works great in shallow water for us in as shallow as 3 feet I still get a great reading when the eyes come in after dark.
I’ve got an 8w/19 and a 22w/tri-ducer. Most days I actually prefer my 8 for shallow water. My 22 sometimes has issues hole hopping adn I have to power cycle it. My small gripe on the 12/20/22 displays is on sunny days. Very tough to see and I have to face it away from the sun. I don’t have that issue with the fl8.
That said last saturday the low power feature on teh 22 was absolutely the difference between me catching fish and my buddy just hoping. I could see the fish in the weeds and he couldn’t with his bird.
As others have mentioned the 22 isn’t the only model with the low power feature.
thanks for all the info….It just seems to me there is a lot of negative things with the marcom units.Maybe not,but it looks that way…I kknow any one of them can break down..But the service is the next important thing..How is the Vex service ?
vexilar service is excellent. they have rebuilt my fl8 twice, all I will say is they are not designed to withstand going 70mph, in a upside down a otter. my fault both times. fast turn around, fixed like it just came out of the box.
Had a chance to check out a vex. today on the lake some guy had….Not sure what model it was,but it was noisey..Even a deaf man like myself could hear it..lol looked to be a nice set up and it showed the jig as well…
Any vex with tri beam, the pro view is less than stellar in shallow weedy water.just my opinion.
