Remember Operation “Fish Hook”?

It was Operation Squarehook and it involved the illegal selling of fish, so I don’t see how there is any comparison.

I think it looks bad that these fish are laying on the ice, but they are 100% going to die anyway and atleast now some animals can get at them and have a feast. If someone wants them for fertilizer, grab a shovel and a bucket.

Going 1 mph over the speed limit is illegal, but I’m yet to see a person ever get a ticket while doing so.

The piles of fish were involved in that as well and 100% of those will die.

As far as going 1 mph over the speed limit and not getting a ticket….well, as one LEO told me… you don’t go fishing expecting to catch every fish in the lake either.

I’d venture to guess a bunch are going to live.

Like BK said, they aren’t going to get every fish out of the lake. If something went wrong with the draw down, you could see an explosion of nice sized bluegills and crappies in a few years. Quick, someone file a lawsuit!

There is a couple key words in BK’s first post. The part about throwing the unwanted fish back in the hole is a key one. No fish to shovel up, no fish to rot on the ice. I think some of you just saw a picture and posted about it.

I’ll say it again. How is netting some fish, taking what you want, then throwing the fish back in the water wanton waste? They are going back in the water in the same condition they were netted in.

I will agree it breaks BK’s have to keep everything law, but I don’t see how it could possibly be wanton waste.

There will be fish that survive. The ones swimming up holes in the ice and being netted are stressed to the point that they are going to die.

Yes I know there were dumped fish in Operation Squarehook but it also involved the illegal buying and selling of fish. The other reason it was such a big story is because most people would be put in jail if they participated in these activities, but a special group of people get to operate buy other rules. In my eyes, there is no comparison to what is happening on Pelican.

I do agree that the video of the guy kicking the sucker and piling up the small crappies is very tasteless and unsportsmanlike.

Along with the fish on the ice someone I know dropped a camera down one of the holes and said the bottom is littered with dead fish as well, going to be a smelly place come summer.

Legal or not, leaving fish that you pulled out of a lake IS wanton waste. I believe what BK (and I fully agree with him)is trying to say is, Whoever would leave hundreds of dead fish lying on the ice makes us ALL look like idiots! If you pull them out TAKE THEM WITH YOU!
If the lake is open take all you can use, just don’t be a slob.

Agree. The DNR should add that to the rule book.

The LAW was written for “LIBERALIZED FISHING” which can be set anytime of year on any body of water.

Thus, the “HOOP NET” is listed as this is one item Minnesota does not allow anytime from how I understand the law and the accompanied language.

The “HOOP NET” is illegal whether you have 60″ of ice or open water.

    From Outer Boundary Magazine:

“Outer Boundary Magazine spoke with the Minnesota DNR supervisor in charge of the Pelican Lake area. The DNR did not give anyone permission to leave fish on top of the ice or place fish back into the water once caught. Everyone they talked to were told they had to take all caught fish home as stated on the DNR website. He also stated Pelican Lake is over 4,000 acres and they could not check everyone, but there are residents from the area going onto the lake to pick up the carnage left by others and the DNR is very grateful that people are stepping up to the plate to clean up the mess others left behind.”

In a round about way, I think there are laws about being slobs already.

I agree, this is Wanton Waste or whatever you want to call it.

Rules are Rules as many other here have said.

Yes, there will be many dead fish on Pelican come open weer, but many are already dead.

Does that mean you can add to the mess/stench forthcoming?

Would you want SLOBS leaving that kind of mess on any body of water where you live or fish?

This kind of behavior reflects BADLY on ALL Fishermen/women, makes it appear as we are ALL SLOBS, when it is just a very small number.

If you witness this behavior, whether on Pelican or any other water body, Please Report it. Photo’s with GPS locations really help.

Turn In Poachers, TIP Inc., is a private, non-profit organization of conservationists concerned about poaching problems. TIP Inc., provides all reward monies for the program. The division cooperates with the TIP program, which was instigated to encourage the public to report natural resource violations. The information and the person reporting can be kept confidential. Persons reporting violations are asked to obtain as much information from observation as possible, and to report all violations as soon as possible. If an arrest is initiated, the person reporting the violation may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000, depending upon the seriousness of the crime. The reward amount will be determined by an impartial panel. Since its inception in 1981, this program has been a deterrent to the senseless waste of wildlife and is extremely beneficial to the DNR Enforcement Division.

    TIP reporting by cell phone

Cell phone companies have joined with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Minnesota Turn In Poachers, Inc. (TIP) in calling a halt to natural resources violations in Minnesota.

Customers can report natural resources violations 24 hours a day by keying #TIP.

The current TIP hotline number, 1-800-652-9093, is still accessible by cell or landline callers who want to report natural resources violations. Cell callers now have the advantage of an easy-to-remember shortcut in #TIP.

The TIP Hotline is a system to report violations and is not intended to be used as a general DNR information line. Callers using the hotline are able to remain anonymous and provide information on violations. Callers inquiring about general DNR information should call the DNR information Center at (651) 296-6157, toll free at 1-888-MINNDNR (646-6367) or a local DNR office.

P.S.: Doing nothing, next time you may be called a Slob as the public sees us all these video’s/photo’s and labels us all the same way.
