i’ll be taking a long snowmobile ride next week and am curious if anyone has any tips on how to pack gear in the otter sled without breaking everything. I’ll be taking a cooler, Marcum, vexilar, and rods and reels for 4 people. The last time this was done all the tackle boxes broke along with a few other things.

Keep the speeds down to double digits especially in the rough spots?

I put a floor in the bottom of mine, then i laid out my rod case, marcums depth and camera, auger etc. the maid dividers between the stuff and screw it all together works great, and i also picked up a cheap indoor outdoor rug to lay in the bottom between the dividers and the floor, adds some weight but if your pulling with a snowmobile or atv doesn’t really matter, plus i think the added weight helps it ride better. i can post a picture later if it helps.

Think about your connection from otter to sled. When this and it will comes loose , off your stuff goes flying. I am, after our last excursion using a extra long pin with cotter key. For next trip in couple weeks I believe I am going to modify this furhter by install a light duty chain from toe bar to sled in case pin falls out. This will be to hinder toe bar falling down into snow and flipping otter and equipment . wrecked alot of stuff last time out and no fun when miles out an no one around. Thankfully we go in groups and have doubles of things. When in deep snow you cannot pull going slow or risk being stuck.

As has been mentioned, speed kills. Yes, you need to maintain a minimum speed in deep, loose snow but when transversing glare ice or hard packed snow,,,, slow down!

I carry an excess number of hand towels and all small gear is organized into empty kitty litter buckets. The hand towels are used to pad and pack items as needed. They also do double duty as,,,,,, hand towels.

Hope this helps. Yes a safety chain is not a bad idea. I think I will add one to my rig. thanks for bring that up.

Find some old couch cushions and cut the fabric off. The yellow foam is great for keeping stuff tight in the otter sled. Put whatever you need in the sled and then jam as much foam as you can between everything to keep all your gear nice and tight. If it doesn’t move, it doesn’t break.
