I received the nod yesterday from James, saying we are Superior bound to cash in on these awesome ice conditions this weekend with the one and only Will Roseberg. The goal isn’t spelunking, but big ole Lakers. I’ve been busy this morning spooling up the whoopin’ sticks for the adventure.

Out of the 3 rods, 2 of them have good knots tied from the braid to fluoro. I’m not going to say which, let’s hope James picks right.

Hey it’s the weekend right, he can’t fire me……. Some days on the ice get a little slow with a camera in my hand, so you have to spice up life a little bit eh?

It looks like Will found a hotel in the midst of the ice cave craze, so I consider that the first win, now let’s see if the fish cooperate!

Maybe KNOT, but ask him about the super tuned raps I tied on for him on Mille Lacs a few years back.

    He has long arms.

Anyone that will rig rods for me while I’m stuck in meetings gets a free pass on the knots holding together. Now don’t think I won’t be testing them so if they come apart its on me.

30 more minutes and I’ll be ready to go. You got the truck loaded yet?

What, no gebu rigs? ;-) FWIW, I don’t use them either.

Unfortunately I wouldn’t know a gebu rig from a hole in the wall. We’re total rooks at this Lake Superior laker thing. We’re going to fish them like we do when we jig them open water. Hopefully the lakers like tubes and hair jigs year-round or we’re going to have a couple slow days on the big lake.

Give him a paycheck twice a month and the training will be quick and painless.

That’s why I had daughters. No “payroll” and easier to train than a dog

Seems I heard something about how rare it is for such a large portion of Superior to be frozen. Obviously not surprising. This sounds like a very fun trip.

Randy, I have absolutely NO family members that are easier to train than any of my many dogs!
Hope you aren’t too bruised when they read your post!

Lloyd, its a long time joke in our family. I’m self employed, so the girls understand that WE all work together for a paycheck. They don’t get a “payroll” check. I’m also replacing them with a dog when they leave for college. Daughter #1 left last fall for UWSP, and we added Ruger, our chocolate lab. It helps my wife with the separation anxiety of her first baby leaving
As James stated, a payroll check twice a month does wonders for training

I was talking to some dude about checking the ice after the gale warnings that were up the other night… I was wondering what ice was going to be in place after the predicted 9′-12′ seas. We discussed the modis picture from yesterday and it looks like the area around the islands are pretty solid, provided you don’t go east of Madeline Island. Have a ton of fun and be safe!!! Looked like Grant did pretty good off the north shore yesterday as well!!!

I hope that works with my son when he’s older.

I’ll post pictures over the weekend if I remember. Basically a gebu (Finnish) is a circular bobbing stick (hand-line) generally wound with coated wire and mono or fluoro leader.

As far as lures, white/chart./flo orange/goebi (sp?) colored tubes, bucktails and pimps all work well. I use anywhere from 1/2 oz. up to 3 oz. depending upon depth and current which can be very significant. Tipping with a chunk of smelt or sucker belly helps too. Depending upon your depths, you may want to use a low-stretch superline of some sort (some will obviously freeze in the open with these temps) with 8′ or so of flouro leader.

    Something like this?

Googled “hand reel fishing lake trout” images and found it. I’ve seen other pics of these reels but they looked a bit more modern than this one. Usually one complete spin of the spool = 2 feet, so that let you know where in the column you were fishing, before everyone had electronics.

Perfect he wants to be my secretary for asbestos inspections, so that would put him on the payroll so I can expect him to have my gear ready also. Perfect. Now i just have to convince him.

I know absolutely nothing about asbestos…..sounds like I’d be great at it! Now for this payroll talk!

Yep, that’s what is called a gebu here in the Keweenaw. More and more guys seem to be shifting over to rods and reels (I use baitcasters myself) with superline but there are still a fair amount using those.

Hey boys, I’m headed up tomorrow morning. Are you guys headed to the Apostles?

I’m headed to Duluth. Good ice has been there for a few weeks too. I hear they’re catching sim nice lakers out there too.

Ben I’m sure you would love it but I don’t need James trying to set a large buktail in the back of my head because I took you away.

Well, sadly it won’t be a laker show from Superior. Holy heck was it cold. We basically had to pack it in and head for home due to conditions for the first time this winter when it got so cold the manual focus rings on our camera lenses froze internally. When we tried to warm them we only made matters worse by introducing condensation. If we had caught a giant laker, which we didn’t, we wouldn’t have been able to film it… disappointing! This round goes to mother nature but I see warmer temps on the horizon!

I was out the last few days fishing cohos. Set up in 30 feet of water and managed to ice couple cohos each day and some bonus lake herring. Cold but a lot of fun.
