What a rinky dink way to take that man’s trophy laker.
X2
I understand that the guy technically broke the rules, seems like he understands that too. Give him a ticket, but let him keep the record fish

What? He was allowed one fish. He kept two and got caught. Shame on him for keeping two fish. Given the facts presented, it seems pretty cut and dried.
I guess a lifetime of party hunting deer and fish have rubbed off on me.
That seems like a unique situation – let the man keep the fish give him a fine and call it a day. As for a world record the guy did break the rules
The cops seeing him with the first 4 lb fish was the clincher. BTW how many of you rules junkies count your fish separately when fishing with friends in the same boat?

I believe if he would not have been (IMO) CHEAP, using a Conservation License vs. buying a Regular License he would have been Ok, as most limits are doubled.
Living there, he knew better and knew what he was doing. Seriously, he had already been checked by the MNR earlier.
He could have been humble and let his Nephew take credit for the Big One.
Rules are Rules!
I saw the Walleye on facebook, it looks eerily like the Walleye in the Gillespie photo, same angle etc… controversy?

To save people the time, here are both pics… Not the same.

To answer your question; Anyone fishing in my boat catches or not catches, their own limit. Always has been that way, always will be. Same way if you are hunting with me.

Party fishing is legal here. 3 guys in the boat = 18 walleyes in the well for a limit. Whether I catch 0 or 18 of them, 18 is the goal.
They should have confiscated the 4lb fish and gave him the minor party fishing ticket.

Same thing for the guy who snags the next world record walleye with an 8/0 treble? Give him a ticket and let him keep the record?

We cannot party fish here in Iowa, so we keep our limits separate unless we are just going to keep one limit (6 eyes, 25 bluegill, 25 crappie, etc). I have been checked and asked to see each person’s limit.. and I have seen others caught with a stringer of 25+ white bass (two people) and the CO told them to separate them right there and make two separate limits.
When in MN you can party fish, so we just use one livewell and keep a combined total.

Just a heads up that the limit is 1 for both Conservation and Sportman Licenses in the US/Ontario Border waters of Zone 5.

I keep thinking back to this scenario too. Seems like vanity got the better of this guy. That and he never thought they would track him down.

If you were that nephew would you claim the fish? Get your picture and BS story all over the internet and your name in the record books. Family, friends, and locals are all going to hear about it and you have to lie straight to their face and claim a record fish you didn’t catch.
Personally, it sounds like a terrible situation to be in and I don’t think I could do it.
They should have just thrown the fish back!
No. I wasn’t thinking of the nephew fantasizing a record. Just if he wanted the fish on the wall. I’m starting to change my mind. Jail that SOB!!!!

I’m thinking the local DNR office unless they don’t want to pay to have it mounted.
Shoot your mouth off and start talking about how it all happened….
Next thing you know….you were breaking the law…
This is not the first time a trophy has been bagged and the rules were not followed – to the letter.
A little sad as I am sure this guy is not a game hog or a poacher.
Dog
Sheesh! Just like most fishermen I know! Size matters!!!! Lol
On the boring serious side. Just another example of how personal integrity left town with the covered wagon… Along w common sense, common courtesy, to name a few.
Is it spring yet? Beating up on individuals who made a poor choice is getting old.
You fish your whole life dreaming of the day you catch that monster PB or even greater, a world record and they take confiscate it from the taxidermist,,
The news claimed that it was caught in Minnesota. Why don’t party limits apply?
Then again, this was the same news source that called Everts, Events Fishing Resort.
