Well, after about 3 trips on the ice in the dark, finally was able to get the ling I was looking for. Big buckshot, big minnow, and a lot of holes later, finally landed on a spot that has these fish cruising by. Rocky extended point in 30FOW.

Sorry for the kill shot, it was seriously too cold to deal with any pictures while I was out on the ice. Cooked it up too, and it was absolutely wonderful. 80% like lobster, and none of the fishy taste!

You and many others have me highly interested in trying them. Next trip to LOTW will have me targeting them. Can’t wait.

    Burbot, eelpout, ling, lingcod
Guess ling is what we call it up here, eh. Hands down the tastiest fish ive ever caught. But not enough fun compared to crappie

They are the tastiest fish I’ve ever had. And don’t listen to all the talk about boiling them and dipping them in butter. Just bread them and pan or deep fry them. Walleyes and crappies don’t even compare.

Are these also knowen as dogfish? Had one on one spring in the Wisconsin river. Hit on a spinner bait. It put up a great fight.

We had Sportman’s Lodge cook ours for appetizers one year.
Definitely better than walleye when fresh.
They don’t seem to fare well after being frozen.

Nice! Brings back a good memory. Mid 1990’s on LOW’s fishing out beyond Arnesen’s reef. Couple anglers heading in a lil early stop by to see if they can have our ‘pout. Back in they day you could stack ‘pouts up on the ice whether you ate them or fertilized the garden. Then wanton waste laws came into effect….

Anyhow we ask what they plan to do w our ‘pouts & they invite us to stop by one of the trailers near Babblers. Fast forward. We pull up and here’s a deep fat fryer fired up so we head in only to eat some of the best fish ever. And the mojo potatoes rocked too!

Dogfish aka Bowfin. Eelpout is a different species and they are a good eating fish.

I know I’ve been catching 1 a year while I’m at LOW in OCT. Never kept them, really slimmy imo. Filet them like a channel cat? Cook fresh and do not freeze?
