Been messing with the new VMC ones this year, should go good with triggerX. BFishN makes good ones too and they’re cheaper. $3 per jig is a bit pricy and lost a few to big fish on 2# line.

I like Fiskas in 4mm generally School Bus, Clown or Red. The small hook makes if difficult to use some plastics. Fiskas also makes a Balance N59 and that works well with plastics.

5mm Custom jigs and spins in orange and yellow.

I have so much confidence in crappies with that color the past two years. I really like it. Good hooks too they are not brittle.

My faves are the Majum from CJS and the bannana bug from northland in pink, red and green. Really also like the half ant drop jig clam came out with this year, its a vertical presentation of a tungsten jig.

custom jigs and spins majmun is what you want. Bigger hook for plastics. I use chekai and fiskas for bait, but the hooks are too small for plastics IMO.

I’m starting a project in a couple days, making my own #10 diamond style 4mm tungsten jigs.

I also have huge confidence in yellow/orange for crappie. It just flat out catches fish!!!

I’ve caught more fish on Clam Ant Drop, Blade Spoon, and Bomb Spoons this year than ANYTHING I’ve ever fished with. Absolutely incredibly colors that do not fade, plus amazing action. Not to mention the incredible feel you get with the tungsten jigs. I’ve caught 2-1 sometimes 3-1 in terms of fish when fishing with someone because of them. 100% recommend their product, I know i’ll be buying a lot more.

Sorry, it’s the Clam Drop Jig -not VMC. Bought mostly VMC that day at Gander Mt. At > $3 each I didn’t buy many but they work great. Did buy lots of pug bugs though. Love the VMC bass football jigs too, and drop shot hooks… experimenting with the small ones on my ice rods instead of using swivels. Not a lot of hookups so far but just getting started. Figure the extra bait and hook can’t hurt (actually it does, hooked myself a few times because I forget it’s there) does seem to draw in more fish with multiple baits down the hole.

Injection molding at high temps and adding other metals as a binder. It would be very difficult (and expensive) to make them at home.

Soldering on a hook (with lead) solder on a purchased jig head is the only way I’ve heard of to DIY.

What the the point of going over to tungsten if the hooks have to be attached with lead? check out Eco-jigs, made with tin no lead, hand made.

You buy the cheapest unpainted tungsten jig in the size you want. They are cheap because of the crap hooks on them, just unsolder the crap hooks and solder on good hooks in whatever size you want. Too big of a hook won’t balance right with a small weight, so you have to stay pretty close to “stock”. ie you couldn’t put a #6 hook on a 3mm head.

I thought you would buy blanks and then solder the hooks on and paint…
Sounds like a PITA to use the method your talking about..
I’ll just stick to buying the finished ones……..

Well you are buying the jigs for the blanks, so its 6 of 1 half doz of the other. You can get the cheap tungsten jigs for at or less than a dollar a piece. (I bought 20 for $20 last time) Hooks are 16 cents each for mustad ultra points (free shipping from fishusa) and the little dab of solder is not even worth mentioning. So you’ll have $1.16 each in them, call it $1.20 to be safe. How many tungsten jigs with big mustad hooks can you buy for $1.20 each?

De-soldering should take about 20 seconds to heat the solder and pull the hook off, another 20 seconds to tin the new hook and lay it on. So lets say a minute to make a new jig. Painting is a hobby so I don’t count my time or effort there.. but you could just powder paint them real quick if color doesn’t matter to you.

Now would be a good time to mention that yesterday gander mnt had a big bin of CJ&S jigs for $1.33 and $1.66 each. They had a few 4mm chekai in there for $1.66 ea (small hooks), and majmun #10 (5mm) for the same price. Might be worth checking out for $1.80 ea with tax. I hate gander mtn with a passion but I had to pick up a few of the chekai for fishing bait.

Well…That’s the thing for me..I would not want to do a cheap paint job just to save time…
If it’s worth the extra work to save the .40 per jig for you go for it…
It just does not seem to be worth it to me….for that little bit of money I’ll just go with factory ones…..
    Good luck with your project….

My go to is a black Fiskas in any size size depends on depth. But I do like the CJ&S tungstens with the longer shank hooks. I have about 30 of them but just never tied one on yet. Black jig with a black dupee plastic….

Could you point me towards a 4mm diamond style tungsten jig with a #10 hook for $2? I’d like to buy a few for back-ups to mine.
