Very soft bite today. Water was deep 40ft plus. I had 1 1/16 oz minnow head sickle hook jig no color with a Berkley 2 in smelt with the head bit off.

I’m guessing you caught those underneath the ice and above the bottom? Or however that saying goes . Nice fish, its too bad you can’t catch those fish in shallower water that way you wouldn’t have to worry about them dying upon release. Who knew there is such crappie fishing way up in the northeast, always heard Champlain in VT was a good fishery though. How many guys ice fish up there in Maine?

Maine has a HUGE winter following. I would say maybe 100-1 over open water. But most of those folks are after the Trout. Its only in the last 6-7 years that people are looking for other forms of fishing.

Really! That is fascinating that there is that much of a discrepancy from soft to hard water fishing up there. It’s a good thing for the pannnies though, that way they get a few months off with limited pressure, well except from you I suppose, keep after em

I frequent some of the other ice fishing boards, one is just full of guys from Maine. I honestly don’t see much talk about panfishing up there. All I see is perch, pickeral, and trout. With a vast majority of the guys running tip-ups only and not even owning a jigging rod. Maine could be a hidden gem for crappies!
