Breakdowns are part of filming the show, and right now we’re at Sunset Lodge ready to blast off across the lake by sled to get a part in Warroad. Last night on our way off the lake we started losing power in James’ diesel, and got to Jim’s corner Only able to go 14mph. Instead of going 53 miles through Canada to Warroad and risk breaking down totally, we turned around and headed back. Once we get to War road, get the part and get back, we’ll install and head home. Always an adventure!

I love my Diesel but not in this weather, she spends a lot of time parked in the garage lately.

The fuel filter is plugged. Bad fuel and 30 below temps are a bad combo. We found a replacement in Warroad and we’re headed back after warming up for a spell. With a little luck we’ll all be home in time for supper.

The only time I got bad fuel was in Baudette the at the Conoco station and it was -25. No fun on the road and have an issue. Good luck

A spare fuel filter, a bottle of white power service fuel treatment and a red bottle of power service 911 should be in your diesel pickup at all times in the winter.

Better the filter than the injectors! I’ve been down that road – twice

When I read your post, the first thing I thought of was the fuel filter. Had the same problem up in Wyoming. Crappy fuel hadn’t changed the filter in quite a while. Headed into Laramie at 15mph and got it changed out and new fuel. Ran great after that.

Having had to do this on the side of the road(with a filter that holds a 1/2 gallon of fuel)in sub-zero weather a few times, it is a hassle for sure…..
It was a good thing that the Caterpillar’s had a pump that a guy used to fill the filter… other wise it would have been REALLY fun

Be careful James and have fun

If you have time, swing by the shop on the way thru, I have something for your truck.

X2, most fuel around here is only rated to a -20 degree’s. It’s colder then that where he is.

Another thing a guy can do is mix 60/40 #2 and #1

Back in high school when I was a petroleum transfer engineer there was a guy that would pump 1 gallon of gas for every 15 gallons of diesel when it got really cold to keep it from gelling. I guess it worked because he never had an issue, but we always had good fuel there.

It could’ve been a whole lot worse… You could have broken down on your way heading to the lake instead of off it

Hopefully you guys found some fish up there so that this just turns out to be a good story to go with a show

x2 Had this happen in WY snowmobiling at -40 actual temp. We were stuck at 15mph till the additive began to work. Sad thing is were were buying #1, or so we thought I guess… We got lucky and the filter was not gelled.

You will only make that mistake once.

Replaced and rolling, should be good to go. Turns out our cameraman Ben had it out and ready to replace when we got back.

So how any of the plastic body pins broke on the wheel well shroud in that cold weather?

There is a fuel treatment called Meltdown that seems to work far better than 911. Never had seen it before working in Grand Rapids this winter.

If I’d have been doing it, all of them. Ben only broke 2!

Having a fuel pressure gauge (if you don’t already) is critical for making sure enough pressure is getting to the pump. Also lets you know if the filter needs to be changed.

This seems like a good time to give BK a kick in the butt to find an automotive sponsor for IDO-TV and maybe go with a gas engine truck for your winter shows…

If nothing else, BK probably just needs a kick in the butt anyway.

I think for the amount of miles driven the diesel is the way to go.
