Trout opener was a success in Ely yesterday! Reports from all over the Ely area from over a half dozen different stream trout lakes were all positive, people are catching trout! We started out the morning fishing for Splake and Rainbows, and did well on both, there were some nice 17″ Splake in our bucket and a good mix of both in the 15″ range. The biggest ones came off 1/16oz pink VMC Tumblers worked about a foot off the bottom. The rainbows tend to cruise suspended anywhere from inches below the ice to 6 feet down where we were, in other lakes they may cruise up to 15 feet down. We were getting those on red, pink or orange glow moon jigs in 1/64 oz tipped with some spikes and/or wax worms.
We switched gears before noon and went after Lake Trout, Scott pulled up a nice 3 lb Laker on a 3/16 red shiner Tingler and we got a decent 5lb Bourbot on a frozen cisco. From all the reports I got, the north side of the lake was doing best, nearly every group on the north side caught a laker and a few groups had 2, with fish over 10lbs recorded. All in all an excellent opening day in Ely!
