I caught this bluegill and severeral more just like it last weekend.
What makes a bluegill get this round before it gets long?

Good genetics!!! We caught some like that in the BWCA years ago but they were 12″ long, just like a Dinner Plate

baby got back, geez that fish is round I don’t think I’ve ever seen any quite that vertical vs. horizontal, a 11-12 incher like that has to break a pound

I caught one the other day that looked like that down in P14. Really odd. I have no idea what causes it.

Yes they were all of a pound, and talk about fight, they pull hard when they run sideways.

gotta love the barstool talk about “caught a limit of pounders” I hear that soooooo much it’s sickening, a 1 pound gill is the equivalent of a 12 pound eye IMO, man that must’ve been awesome catching gills like that, I’d say I wish we had gills like that around home but I’m sure they’re out there I just haven’t caught one yet, I think 10-3/4 is my biggest on public waters and that wasn’t very tall or round, just gotta keep plugging away

A lot of people don’t know what a pounder looks like. Usually a 7 1/2 incher is 1/3 of a lb. I didn’t have a scale but i wouldn’t be surprised if it was 1/2 a lb. It was pretty thick too.

I’ve caught some big gills, but never hit the pound mark. 3/4lb was the biggest, and that was a 10″ male that was at least 2″ thick. Was out of a mining pit that had not been fished in 20 years. Every bluegill we caught was like that. I’ve caught longer, but never heavier.

a 1# gill is MASSIVE. My buddy has two on the wall, one 1.25# and one 1.5# caught in the same day. They are absolutely huge.. they don’t even look like bluegills, they are the size of a dinner plate!

Gotta cheat and hit fed ponds in Iowa! Got 20+ over a lb in one afternoon, with the fly rod! That’s a blast, but couldn’t bring myself to keep any…

Depends on shape but I’d say 11 plus with some thickness might make a pound but 12 should for sure never caught one that big but my buddy is a taxidermist and he mounted two an 11-1/2 and 11-3/4 that were a lil over a pound but not very tall just thick

There’s alot of variability in bluegill growth, which from what I’ve seen means anywhere over 10″es to more than 11″es. The problem with weighing bluegills is that most often you have to kill them to do it with any accuracy, which to me isn’t a good option. Few field-scales are accurate within 2-3oz when you start looking at those lighter weights. Couple that with the fact that unless they’re in a bag/basket and the scale is tared, it’s tough to find a place to put that scale hook in a gill without killing it. So even when a fish has been taken to mount, and weighed in, unless you’re using a digital scale similar to the kind meat markets used, it’s difficult to tell for sure.

HOLY PIE PLATE! I have caught a lot of gills in my life and I don’t think I have ever caught one that tall. That thing is awesome! If it turned sideways it would feel like you were pulling up a Halibut
