Scouting Panfish

As I stated in an earlier thread I consider myself a fairly avid walleye angler but when it comes to panfish I’m not afraid to say I have lots to learn. I am interested in becoming a better hole hopper to help scratch out some panfish to fill the midwinter lulls. I am just wondering what types of structure/depths you look for when your scouting out a new lake for gills mid winter. Also I would appreciate any tips to make hole hopping easier and more productive that you have found. I have always been a fan of learning from others experiences so I don’t have to learn the hard way. Thank you for your time. Can’t wait to hear the discussion of tactics.

I suggest taking one known good pan fish lake and concentrate your efforts there. Usually not all pan fish are in one spot. Often you may find bigger gills deeper or shallower than then mass of chip sized gills.
If I see guys getting small or average gills in 5 fow and the weeds extend to 9 feet, I’ll extend a string of holes to the outer edges of deep weeds.

Electronics are key for seeing the entire water column. It can change frequently that larger gills are higher in the column or lower. Good hole hoppers are willing to spend hours to find a good bite
