Found a new champion CJ-8 And was wondering what the difference from my original RCJ-6-Y plug is? Could I use the new one or not? They both look the same but I would think one is hotter than the other.

The RCJ is a resistor type plug, and I think the 6 is a hotter plug. For the cost of getting the correct plug I think I would just find the right plug. It isn’t like buying 6 plugs for the new direct injection outboards at $20 a pop.

I don’t know a lot about plugs but I wouldn’t use a different number for sure. I would get exactly what it calls for unless you know for sure. We used to dabble with hotter plugs in our sleds but I don’t recall it ever really making a diff. But if guys are doing it and it works better…..

    Hi,
I was surprised to see that Home Depot stocks the Champion RCJ-6-Y spark plug. Use the store locator and then check whether the store you want to try has the part in stock.

    Take care,
    Roger

NGK heat scale is the opposite of most spark plugs.

For NGK smaller number = hotter. Not so with Champion.

The reason behind running a range or two hotter plugs in sleds was to keep them from fouling as much, no performance increase to really speak of. Too hot and you could damage the motor.

Lower the number the hotter the plug. Going down one heat range (hotter Plug) raises the combustion temp for 70 to 100 degrees.

cj-8 is what my book says to use in my SM. It’s 5-6 years old though. Is this a Solo?

Go to a good small engine doctor and take you spark plug with you,and get a NGK plug that will match. I was in the service station business for years and this is the only plug that stood up to all that it had to offer. Real sad that a spark plug made in another country, works better than anything made in USA.
I am opening up a cup of worms here but just ask anyone that has any thing to do with spark plugs and see.

I have a SM Lazer Mag with a Tecumseh with the yellow decompression button. When replacing my CJ-6 plug it was suggested that a CJ-8 plug would be hotter and improve cold weather starting.(by strikemaster) It did not change anything

I was told a hotter plug would be OK in a cold weather application. If the same engine was used in another warm weather application then the CJ8 plug would be too hot

Actually, you are opening a can of worms. Tea comes in a cup. Worms, much like whoopass, come in a can.

I’ve been using the cj8 for years, no problems. It was one of the pros tips on the old Strikemaster website before this new one.

Well I did a little experiment with the two plugs. Bought a 6 and a 8 tried them both and the 8 did make a difference with the idle and a little more power under load it seamed. I’m sticking with the 8.

X2 on the cj8y! I run it in my SM 2hp solo. Never had a problem with it. It always starts nice no matter what. And I drill alot of holes.
