Gonna try something different today with a high temp of -15. Gonna fish walleyes over 30-35 feet on a bigger main lake flat with dead bait suspended 5-10 off the bottom. Haven’t seen a walleye over 24 inches in 2 weeks.

interesting to see how you do, When cold fronts hit I like to maximize bite periods if I am getting on the water in the dark I will be out a half hour earlier and if I am fishing a night bite I will fish a half hour to an hour later. Good luck – QB

I’m waiting for it to warm up lol. I’ve been getting 10-16 inchers from 3:45-5:30. Having trouble finding the bigger females. Happens every year in northeastern minnesota around this time. The walleye bite gets slower and the bigger fish aren’t schooled up like they are at first ice. Thinking when they do feed its a quick meal of something big.

They where deeper than 35. Found them stacked on the 30-50fow drop after I nice 30fow saddle between a island and point. Got a few 17-19 inchers and got picked clean a few times. Fished tipups in 40fow 5 foot of bottom with smelt. Hopefully it warms up to -5 soon burrski!

Your welcome. Lake I fished has real clear water can see 22 feet down. I’ll post I report of sight fishing walleyes earlier this year at a later time. Saw some interesting stuff. Neutral fish sure like running with spilt shots in there mouth.

Lakes this clear are always a challenge. Deeper is definitely the way to go, but restraint is needed if you get into them. Anything past 30 FOW or so is usually toast so plan on keeping them where/as legal, or moving if the avg. size is too big.

Also, when it’s that clear, like Quintin said, bite windows are key. On a few clear water bodies I’ve fished in the past, fish come through in droves and feed heavily for as short as 15 minutes. Be ready when they do come, the after dark bite has been my most productive period, in 24-30 foot depths.

This lake does have sporadic feeding binges. I never catch more than 2 walleyes in a run. Lake has tons of structure with a healthy forage of huge 5-8 inch shiners. I haven’t spent much time learning the lake but its definitely a ? Lake. I fish clear water in and out of the bwca with a consistent outcome. The walleyes in this lake almost act like lake trout.
