Seems like many people swear by using only a black jig combined w/ a black plastic. I guess i’m not quite a believer in it yet, but would like to hear some tips and best situations to use them. I would assume clear water would be the best situation to start.

My favorite color for clear water fish. Don’t know why it works, but it does! I do switch to a glow color when the sun starts to set though.

Depends on water clarity, light level, and food source of the fish. Sometimes a shock factor also works. If I were to use only 1 color exclusively it would be a purple combo. To handicap yourself like that however doesn’t make sense.

I know there are a lot of guys that do not get hung up on the color of a jig when using plastics but I have a hard time yet just using Black, gold, silver or even plain lead. I like to try and coordinate the color of my jig with the piece of plastic as pictured here; it is just personal preference on my part.
However I have found that tungsten jigs work better for me when fishing plastic. The extra weight seems to help bring a little more life to the plastic by helping keep a tighter line. The tungsten has also help me with detecting bites when straight lining without any strike indicators such as spring bobbers.

Use them when that is the color the fish are hitting. If the fish don’t want the color I have on the rotating begins, If I find they are liking the darker colors such as red or purple but are still a bit picky I will transition over too black. so far this year in the doz or so times I have been out, one time black was the lights out color. that just what the fish wanted that day.

I can say that the first rod I grab when starting off is the rod with a black tungsten and use either a micro nuggie, wedgie or a black dupee. Been using the 5mm bobbersdown tungsten but recently switched over to a 5mm CJS because I prefer the long shank hook.

Durning the day dark colors work better in low light conditions(overcast skies) and lighter colors work in high light conditions (clear skies). Try it and see what works.
