I have caught less then 200 crappies in my life so was wondering how common blue ones are. I caught one this weekend and didn’t notice it till I got home. Little busy I guess, catching fish. lol. The color difference was quite a bit bluer (sp)than the others. Have pics but they washed out in the sun and you can’t tell it is blue. Anyone ever caught one?

I’ve caught ones that had a blueish tint to them, like a shiner does. I’ve also caught green ones, gold ones, yellow ones, and one that had spots of red.. but I think that was just herpes.

Yes, I have caught crappies with an iridescent blue/purple cast to them. I think they can change color based on mood.

A lot of color variations, only 2 crappies exist according to google however, the black and whites. Amazing the color patterns from one body of water to the next and time of year caught. Not saying a mutant blue slab isn’t possible however such as rare albinos etc… if you ice another one lets see a pic if you can, be interesting to see

White crappies will show more iridescent colors than blacks will. I’ve seen them where they almost look purple and I’ve seen them where they indeed appear quite blue. I’m thinking it may have something to do with mineral content in the water they live in and how those minerals affect the scales color and ability to reflect color.

Tom’s right on. Esp. bigger whites from certain bodies of water will have the most beautiful purple iridescence to them. Definitely one of the prettiest panfish species around!
