Video Details: Season 8 – Episode 5. Ice Fishing. Crappie & Perch. Filmed December 17, 2013, In-Depth Outdoors TV Host James Holst and Pro-Staffer Calvin Svihel enjoy a 35 mile snowmobile trek up into the Northwest Angle of Lake of the Woods to fish walleye on the rock reefs, points and humps that are scattered around Oak Island. The bite peaks at sunset with the anglers enjoying fast-paced action on aggressive walleye moving shallow to feed as light levels fall with the setting sun.

Great show James & Cal !! One question…were you guys running a braid line or mono ? Wondered if you had any ice up problems being you were fishing outside. Nice Job !!

    James !!

Great job and beautiful scenery from the little you showed on the TV… From what you did show I could no doubt spend a week up on the NW Angle !!

    Cal… Cousin !!!!!

Great job on the ice action… Were you guys putting minnow heads on the VMC Spoons ?
Did you try tipping them with plastics only ?

One more question for either of you.. What rods were you using ? I’m guessing TUCR, but what length and so on..

thanks guys for some great entertainment !!

great show guys! I am really liking the graphic you put of of the lake bottom, it made it much easier to understand what you were talking about and the kinds of structure you were looking for. Would love to see more of that in the episodes.

I use 6lb suffix mono on my walleye rods. James also had mono but not sure what #test he uses. Still had some ice freezing to mono right by the hole, which can be cleared off with hands by sliding ice down your line so the water melts it.

Koonce…shiner heads or fathead tipped on spoons. I was using a 36″ tucr precision rods with split grip, handled those walleyes very good. No plastics were used on this trip.

I was using 6# Sufix Ice Magic. We had some icing but nothing we couldn’t work around with minimal effort. Braided line would have been an icing disaster at those temps so I try to avoid using it unless the temps are above freezing or if I’m fishing exclusively in a heated house.

I think the really cool thing about that graphic is it was created using “stock” Contour Elite software available over the counter. http://strategicfishingsystems.com/ We were actually able to show the exact location we fished which definitely adds some additional realism to the whole deal.

    Cal,

On the show you said you were tipping your rap’ with a minnow head. I was wondering which hook you were tipping? I assume the rear hook ? Or was it the treble? I’m sure this is an obvious answer but I’m new to this stuff. Thanks! Nick

Nice work boys! Looked cold out there with that fine blowing snow. You guys weathered it well and pounded them!

The Contour Elite software runs on your PC and allows you to pre – scout for trips and once you’ve saved the waypoints you want to fish that info can be exported to your gps. The 3D imagery of Lake master depth data is some powerful stuff but I think the most impressive capability is to be able to pick apart a body of water using the software’s built in search function. Once you have a spot that is producing fish you can tell the software to “find more like this one” and it will come back with some impressive results. The software takes into account depth, bottom composition, rate of depth change along with a bunch of other user selectable criteria.

I know I was blown away by the software’s ability to find many of my best night trolling spots on Mille Lacs by dropping a waypoint on one of my top producing spots and using that search tool.

I’m not sponsored by Contour Elite…just impressed with the capabilities. And I’m sure I’m only making use of a fraction of what it can do.

I use the treble hook to tip with a minnow head. One thing I noticed recently is I started to hook the minnow head thru the skull first instead of from the chin thru head. Seems to hold better if you hook skull first thru the chin.

As a fellow Mac guy I feel your pain. I run Contour Elite through an install of Parallels software. It only thinks its running on a pc.

I was out fishing last weekend and lost the minnow head a couple times. I watched it fall to the bottom on my flasher so I know I didn’t get outsmarted by a walleye . I was going to try something different but then I caught a couple walleyes with it hooked the “traditional” way so I didn’t want to jinx myself. I had just picked up a jigging rap’ the week before the show and I can’t wait to test drive it, now that I see how they are supposed to be fished. Thanks for the response. Nick

I usually just pinch them off with my thumb after hooking them up. Easy-cheesy.

We’ll definitely be going back up to Sunset Lodge again this winter. While the walleye fishing was good it was another species that grabbed my attention during our stay and didn’t let go.

I got into a very, very intriguing conversation with one of the lake guys named “Sunset Doug.” Doug runs the fish house operations for Sunset and showed me a cell phone full of 14″ – 16″ crappie pics. Apparently they see a tremendous giant crappie bite that starts late January that runs until the ice falls apart. You can catch 11″ crappie anywhere but “on the tape” 15″+ crappie are rare and it seems that area gives them up in big numbers.

Cal and I look forward to seeing it for ourselves! And while we’re at it we might have to try our hand at some of the giant whitefish they catch up there as well.

Why not head a few more miles north and add in a few lakers while you’re at it?
